James Comey sent FBI agents to interview Flynn on his calls with Sergey Kislyak during his first few days on the job. The FBI had briefed the Obama administration on the potential Logan Act violation after the calls were intercepted as part of routine U.S. surveillance.

FBI Director James B. Comey initially opposed notification, citing concerns that it could complicate the agency’s investigation.

IF Comey did not know about what  was discussed, why did he contact the Obama administration ?

why was he investigating Flynn's conversation ?

then you tried to spin what I said

when and where did I state that Director Comey claimed the call was illegal  ?

More news ...

Michael Flynn was at a beachside resort in the Dominican Republic, a stretch of sand and sun that he and his wife had visited for years, when he took a few moments out of their post-election vacation for a call with the Russian ambassador to the United States.

As a veteran intelligence officer, Flynn must have known that a call with a Russian official in Washington would be intercepted by the U.S. government, pored over by FBI analysts and possibly even shared with the White House.

But Flynn’s removal was also the culmination of swirling forces and resentment unleashed by the 2016 election. He embodied the bitterly partisan nature of the contest, leading “Lock her up” chants directed at Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton during the Republican National Convention. His unusual association with Russia — and the discovery of his secret communications with the Russian ambassador to the United States, Sergey Kislyak — fanned suspicion among senior Obama administration officials of a more sinister aspect to Russia’s interference in the election. And ultimately, Flynn’s misleading statements about the Kislyak calls added to broader concerns about the Trump administration’s regard for the truth.

Senior Obama administration officials said they felt so uncertain about the nature of the Flynn-Kislyak relationship that they took it upon themselves to scale back what they told Flynn and others on his incoming national security team, particularly on sensitive matters related to Russia. Officials emphasized, however, that there was no formal decision to limit information sharing with the Trump transition team.

“We did decide to not share with them certain things about Russia,” a former senior Obama administration official said. “We just thought, who knew? Would that information be safe?”

As Moscow’s lead envoy in Washington, Kislyak’s communications were routinely monitored by the FBI, including diplomatic reports he filed with Moscow in which he documented his interactions with Flynn, according to current and former U.S. officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence matters.

At the same time, Russian intelligence services were carrying out an assault on the election, delivering troves of emails stolen from Democratic Party servers to the WikiLeaks Web site, according to U.S. officials. U.S. intelligence agencies later concluded that the effort was designed to destabilize U.S. democracy, damage Clinton’s prospects and help elect Trump.

No evidence has surfaced to suggest that Flynn’s contacts with Kislyak were in any way tied to the Russian operation. Nevertheless, by mid-December, senior officials in the Obama White House began to hear about Flynn’s contacts with Kislyak, both from intelligence reports and other sources.

Susan E. Rice, President Barack Obama’s national security adviser, did not give Flynn advance notice of the sanctions that the White House planned to impose on Russia over its meddling in the election. Instead, Denis McDonough, who at the time was Obama’s chief of staff, waited until the sanctions were announced to inform his Trump counterpart, a former administration official said.

Flynn had a flurry of communications with Kislyak in the days leading up to that announcement, including, by his account, an exchange of holiday greetings via text message on Dec. 25. The two also traded phone calls that Flynn said were limited to condolences over the assassination of Russia’s ambassador to Turkey and the downing of a Russian aircraft, as well as a preliminary conversation about setting up a phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump.

By that time, Flynn and his wife were in the Dominican Republic for a beachside respite before he moved into one of the most demanding jobs in the White House. It was there, at a resort on the eastern tip of the country, that Flynn fielded a Kislyak call as sanctions were announced.

“He got a hold of me,” Flynn said in the Post interview, “I was on vacation, actually, with my wife.”

The digital packets streaming between their phones were intercepted by the FBI, using capabilities provided by the National Security Agency, as part of its routine surveillance of Kislyak. An FBI agent prepared a brief intelligence report summing up the contents of the conversation, officials said.

The report was not widely circulated and might have attracted only scant attention were it not for a Putin move that baffled Washington. Rather than retaliate against the United States with comparable sanctions — standard practice during the Cold War, and afterward — Putin seemed to greet Obama’s punitive measures with an indifferent shrug.

Putin’s reaction — praised by Trump in a tweet saying “I always knew he was very smart” — sent officials at the White House, State Department and U.S. intelligence agencies scrambling for clues. What they began to focus on, in early January, were Flynn’s calls with Kislyak.

Where does it say anywhere in the above  <QUOTE> Comey knew the calls were illegal ?

Please underline that part..........

All I see is " potential violation" The definition of potential is having the power or being capable of happening,,, not that it happened.

ilslp2003,we have had a good back and forth on this topic and without any calling of names ..but it has run it's course..when you can only use emoticons to reply..

First,I will say, to your credit ...you do attribute your cut & paste post to sources ..e.g. ..Washington Post,CNN Atlantic,Political Fox..etc and you are a good information contributor to the Politics forum  But,in post # 59 were you posted -- "Comey knew about Flynn's illegal calls to the  Russians for over a month and kept it secret"-- there's no reference to a source.

....So now I believe, that I know who it was that claimed James knew the calls were illegal...

I can only conclude, that the source would be your own assumption that it was a fact..otherwise you would have backed it up with a source of reference..like you usually do.

Therefore, can we agree, that Comey knew about Flynn's calls (however long a period that was ) and that there was a
possibility of wrongdoing,,, but there is not any proof ( as of yet ) that he ( Comey ) knew that the calls were illegal..

.......................

One thing I do know, that was illegal,in this whole
scenario....... is the releasing/leaking of the communications between the Russian ambassador and Flynn..

Mainman, Please let me know where I am wrong and explain what Flynn did wrong. The sanctions by O were 'very fake' and with not one 'smidgen' of legitimacy. What does O do? He kicks out about 35 Russian diplomats. What does Putin do? Nothing. Our people are allowed to stay in place. Head shaker.

I was not ignoring you nor making fun of you

I did not assume that Comey knew about Flynn's illegal conversation nor did I forget to cite my sources.

Flynn's Dec. 29 conversation with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak was intercepted and recorded under the The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 ("FISA" Pub.L. 95–511, 92 Stat. 1783, 50 U.S.C. ch. 36). FISA is  a federal law that prescribes procedures for requesting judicial authorization for electronic surveillance and physical search of persons engaged in espionage or international terrorism against the United States on behalf of a foreign power.

Flynn was not necessarily targeted. Russian Intelligence probably does the same to US diplomats.
Flynn may have become a target of FISA after he gave a paid speech in Moscow at the 10th anniversary celebration of Russia Today, a global cable network described by U.S. intelligence as "the Kremlin's principal international propaganda outlet." The RT interviewer pushed him to say positive things about U.S.-Russian cooperation, and Flynn complied.

"Stop being like two bullies in the playground!" Flynn said in Moscow. "It's a marriage, whether we like it or not, and that marriage is very, very rocky right now."

According to Business Insider report

https://www.businessinsider.com/michael-flynn-russia-call-trump-doj-2017-2

The White House was apparently briefed by Sally Yates (She was fired because she opposed the travel ban) , then the acting attorney general, on January 23 about content of Flynn's calls with Ambassador Sergey Kislyak that Yates considered "highly significant" and "potentially illegal."

The Post said intelligence officials began looking into potential contact between Trump's transition team and Russian officials in December when Russian President Vladimir Putin decided not to retaliate against sanctions introduced by the Obama administration. Officials discovered that Flynn called Kislyak the day President Barack Obama imposed the new penalties and gave him "the impression that the sanctions would be revisited at a later time."

The Post report said FBI Director James Comey wanted to wait to brief the new administration on the calls until after the investigation into Flynn and his contact with Russian officials was completed but changed his mind on January 15, after he saw Vice President Mike Pence defend Flynn in an interview with CBS. Pence wrongly claimed in the interview that sanctions had not been discussed during calls between Flynn and Kislyak.

Comey changed his mind on 15-January-2017, approximately  2 weeks after Flynn's conversation was recorded. He must have heard the conversation since he was investigating Flynn.

The FBI has reportedly rejected a request from the White House, asking it to publicly deny media reports about a relationship between Donald Trump's associates and Russia.

Multiple US officials confirmed the FBI's refusal, CNN reported.

According to a White House official, the request only came about after the FBI indicated the reports may not be correct.

However, the request breaks rules limiting communications between the US government and the FBI on pending investigations, CNN revealed.

The FBI, headed up by Director James Comey, declined to knock down the media reports.

Reportedly, FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe and White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus spoke at another meeting about the stories.

While the FBI declined to comment on reports, the White House denied any alleged links between Donald Trump's associates and Russia.

Priebus said the allegations were "complete garbage", CNN reported.

Trump and his aides, including Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, were furious with media accusations.

The New York Times reported that phone records and intercepted calls showed contact between Trump's aides and other associates in the year leading up to his election victory.

US law enforcement and intelligence agencies intercepted the communications around the same time they were discovering evidence that Russia was trying to disrupt the presidential election by hacking into the Democratic National Committee, sources alleged.

Four officials interviewed by The New York Times said they were seeking to learn whether the Trump campaign was colluding with the Russians on the hacking or other ways to influence the election.

FBI works independently.  The President cannot stop an investigation but can only make recommendations that the FBI may decide at its discretion.  Apparently, Russian connection is worth investigating.  Division of powers help to provide checks and balances in government.

You did not believe the Flynn's report either .

You'll get over that one as more news are released

The FBI is investigating Russian interference in the Nov. 8 U.S. election. FBI counterintelligence agents are also examining financial transactions by Russian individuals and companies who are believed to have links to Trump associates.

"There are investigations that are going on and those investigations must find out exactly what Russia was doing in the United States," Senator Ben Cardin, the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told CNN on Friday.

"We need a complete investigation and we certainly don't want the White House at all trying to influence that investigation."
