Not only the checks and balances, but also the fact that we don't allow anyone who is a president to be in the position for life. The voting system, and two terms policy, also rules out the no kings argument. Kind of a sleepy protest or debate. Some kings in the past had full and absolute power for a lifetime, but often there were measures in place by powerful groups to combat an unruly king. Kind of similar to our current checks and balance system. Maybe just a tad more organized.
