wait a second.... other than the Bruins and Wings, we have Hawks, Pens, Kings who have won cups in the past decade or so... 3/5 of these teams and all who have won 2 cups in that time did it through the draft.  Not so fast. 

Habs have a decent nucleus but not the sort you need through repetitive high picks.

Leafs will probably fuk it up but at least they will have a nucleus of high picks including some surprising names like Holland (09#15) and Gardiner (08#17) to go with Rielly (#5), Van Reimsdyck (#2) Kadri #7 and Nylander #8

bruins and wings tore it down? are you kidding me? you win through the draft, yes no one is debating that but saying those two teams tore it down and rebuilt is not true at all

go do your little first round recap for the wings and bruins and you wont find anything

chara/seidenberg not drafted

marchand/krejci/bergeron all 2nd round picks or later

kings is very debatable..kopitar and doughty..who else?

habs have price and galchenyuk (top 5 picks)...so in essence they got their lottery picks which is as much as most of the teams you mentioned

people keep pushing this tank for years option as a rebuild as if thats all it takes its not true...hawks are the only consistent threat, and pens are struggling to win now that they have to deal with the salary cap implications

so you have 2 teams at most that fit this theory, 2 teams in detroit and boston that go against it, the oilers who completely refute it...and so tear it down to rebuild is some great path to success?

its all good Wiggins - originally just wondered what you meant by Habs rebuild.  They have the nucleus to do some damage, just not sure that any team can really get to the championship/dynasty level any more unless they pull a Blackhawks and hit 4 amazing high picks in a year ... such a new era and to return to Leafs, poster boys for the wrong approach as it turns out

They had to take him to complete the trade so Nashville wasn't over their salary cap. At worst he finishes out this year or they trade him before the deadline.

nucleus is key especially in a cap world because you need your big boy that get paid the big money to carry the team.the difference between hawks/pens is the players around the nucleus too. fleury has killed them, loss of staal hurts and the depth isnt as strong as it is with chicago. there was a stretch where toews had 2 goals in 20 games in the playoffs but the hawks still got to the finals. pens could never have malkin/crosby struggle like that and get far.

 dont get me wrong i am not saying the habs are the hawks. ive said many times this year on this board that the habs arent as good as their record indicates. price is my pick for the hart. im not a fan of therrien at all

its tough for places like montreal/toronto to go through the full rebuild which is why neither have...but the major difference between these two is drafting. habs have had strong drafts while the leafs have been brutal. so habs didnt need that full rebuild. price was just a lucky pick after the lockout, so habs didnt have to tank for that pick but they still have a number of players that came up through the system. who exactly on the leafs is homegrown? bozak? kadri who is about to get run out of town? toronto really needs to fix their management before they try to fix the on ice product imo

Just realised who this kid is and he may have the kind of upside to make this deal work for the Leafers... FIRST in CHL scoring a couple years back and 3rd in AHL rookie scoring this season suggests great potential to say the least

First rounder may or may not work out but in 3-5 years it might be Leipsic that people remember most anyway
