but i disagree with you that scientists will never have an answer for how we got here and eveoled, etc.  why do you assume that?  obviously, we'll never know for sure but our collective knwoledge has come a long way.  it was just a few very short years ago when we thought the earth was flat and rainbows were a path to heaven and thunder was God's anger, didn't know a damn thing about genetics and chromosomes, and all sorts of other stupid shit.  in a blink of an eye, we have learned a lot.

why wouldn't we continue learning in the years to come to continue answering questions we don't know enough to answer now, or even ask?

because it's easier to just say god did it...

And continue to learn we will. It's called the human experience. Or, in terms I like -  the late, great director Jon Huston said, "I want to die when I lose interest."

You probably struggle as I did, until I married a Filipina - how in the world do people like the Mormons and Fundamentalists live and conduct themselves in such an arbitrary manner? Because it's what they've been raised with and deem as normal. I bring my wife into this equation because of the way she was raised. What we would deem, in terms of the things she's eaten., as vulgar, to her it was normal. It's what she grew up with. If you saw the movie The Silence of the Lambs, Anthony Hopkins asks Jody Foster the broad question of "what do we covet?" We covet was is normal to us.

For Rostos, I believe what he's trying to say, in not great terms, is God gave man a conscious. With that conscious, we were given 10 guiding principals. In giving us a conscious, God gave us 100% domain over only 1 thing....just 1. The ability to control and direct our thoughts. That's it. What people choose to do with that 100% is what makes us all unique. We all experience the world in such different ways, but with guiding principals and the freedom to control what we think, I believe that is what God's true intention is. You are charged over your lifetime with finding where you fit into that grand scheme. But, until you've found out where you are, you'll still covet the facts that spring follows, winter, winter follows fall, if you're alive, you're voluntarily breathing, the farmer plants seeds in the spring and harvests in fall, et al..That sort of natural order comes from a much larger power than any man can explain.

How about you stop lumping us all together as 'atheists' just because we don't believe in your christian views.  I'm agnostic, I have no fucking idea what higher power there may be, nobody on here is arguing that it is 100% impossible for something to be 'greater' than ourselves.  That's atheism.

You're the one who needs to have the evidence. For example, if I said I had an invisible friend, it's not your job to come up with evidence that I don't, it's my job to prove that I do. Why don't you believe in other gods? You don't have evidence that there aren't other gods Keep laughing and try again.

    Ok, once and for all....

Let us have a look at the definition of "faith"

    Faith -

physically prove to anyone here that a God exists.......but believers have been touched and have a presence of God in there lives...God has shaped and formed there lives because believers have accepted him into there lives.

    Ok..........

Lets have a look at the definition of faith.........

Faith.........belief that is not based on proof......

Non believers cannot prove that there is NO God.......Believers cannot physically prove there is a God (believers including myself have been touched by God.....God has shaped and formed there lives...........as believers have accepted him into there lives....)

So basically......believers and non believers both have faith........one group chooses to go down different paths......

    BOL.....Peace........

    Three points.

    1. The burden of proof is and always will be on believers. Search the "parable of celestial teapot" it proves this using simple terms.

    2. 90% of the world believes in god...this is not an argument. When 90% of the world is betting one team, does that make that team a lock? I rest my case.

    3. The bottom line has been said already: no one can say "I know what happens after I die." If you believe in a god, any god, that's fine, good for you. I can go on and on with arguments as to why it is highly unlikely that any god exists, but there's no point. I can't prove he doesn't just like no one can prove he does. The purpose of life is to enjoy it. If believing in a god helps you enjoy life, then by all means, knock yourself out. But remember as George Carlin once said, "Did you know that God is one of the leading causes of death?" But then again, that may not be a bad thing, right?

Says who? Has anyone died and come back and said what they saw? NO....Therefore no one has physical evidence of the afterlife.......as i said, believers have faith that there is heavan, pergatuory and Hell..Non believers have a range of theories from an eternity of darkness to sleeping to they dont know......Both are based on faith......

Again, man has free will.....I can walk into your house , murder you and say i did it for God.............Man has free will, he can do what he likes....he can use it for good or he can use it for bad........just ask George Bush....People want to turn something into a religion fight, then that is up to them.......

Man has free will.......God created this earth for us, he gave us rules for us to live in....we choose what we do......These rules are so true and so correct as to how we should live........

If science created this earth, did science create rules of the earth it created? .....if u steal from someone, u generally get caught and punished.......Did science create that moral obligation?

As i said, think of your soul as a blackbox recorder.

IMO, people that dont believe in the afterlife have no general purpose in life.......(dont interpret that as me saying i am better than u or vice verse).....i am not here to judge.........but basically, what is the point of this whole life if it is for nothing.......to root as many chicks as u can? to make as much money as you can? to rip off as many people as u can?

U cant take any physical possessions with u when u die......so then what is the point of all this?

I believe we are all on here to learn and love. Everyone has different tests........

Th bible says do not steal........Bernie Madoff stole and look what happened? If this earth was created by science, do u think he would have the ramifactions he experienced? i dont think so...

The bible echoes so many of the values and morals that this world should have and it does......This is a reminder from God that "look i have given u a free will, but follow these rules and u will be good"...if u dont, here is just some of the things that u might experience........Science doesnt provide the moral rules of the earth.........that are very visible in front of us...

In the original question, Crashdavis565 asks why religious people don't wish for death as a faster route to heaven.  Humans and other animals have a natural instinct for life or self-preservation.  Also people fear death and the unknown.

I didnt not say it was the best book ever as that is an opinion. I am sorry if that is how it sounded. We had a professor in college that told us that the Bible was used as a history book in all major universities by everyone including professors that were atheist. We did not believed him therefore he assigned us to research and in fact every professor I talked to in HIstory departments around the US and even in England said that they used the Bible often and is one of the most accurate books there is. Take out the religious part of it but use the facts based on history.

THE BIBLE IS EQUIVALENT TO THE NATIONAL ENQUIRER. NUFF SAID.......................

I see toxicity is part of your DNA. Or better yet, what my friend from Rockland calls being a Masshole.
