Regarding the post that I wrote about self respect- you are making a decision that will allow you to sleep at night (would you feel good about the decision if you had her prosecuted?) If she has been a "friend" for 10 years, it would lay heavy on your conscience. Giving a long term friend another chance is a choice to be respected. What comes around goes around- somewhere down the line, someone will go out of their way for you in a big way-guaranteed. You have the chance to shine with a decision-perhaps it will get you a few steps closer to the big guy!

I've had to remove people from the "Payroll" multiple times.  Never pleasant. 

However my business is a Billion Dollar empire so I have to be more careful than most.

Don't listen to some of these posters that have a "jerkoff mentality". They put themselves above everyone else by being "smarter" or try to belittle those that have opposing values. I think a lot of this thread has to do with a persons upbringing. I learned at an early age how to treat a person with respect. About how not to put yourself above others. And about how to believe in the good in a person and how to be supportive when the road gets rough. I'm no better than anyone posting on this website- I am just as good though.

Give her a hotdog and a road map then send her on her way.  I'm sure she is real sorry she GOT CAUGHT.  Not sorry at all that she took your money.  Get your money back no matter what.  Whatever money she made you was her JOB.  It's not up to employees to give them self "BONUSES."  She's had you wrapped around her finger for 10 years.  I know it sucks, I've had to fire my "best" employee a few times.  But, they are not GOOD employees if they steal.  Bottom line is all that matters in business, if you don't think so you are fucked.  Get rid of that thief.

But clearly it is because of the gambling and things got out of hand. Now her life is in a crisis big time. If she was a bad person and had intention to do such a thing i am sure she would have done it sooner and with bigger amounts.

If she gets treatment she is on the right path and someone who acknowledge their grave error's and problems deserve a second chance.

 I will keep you all informed.  She is paying me back.  I haven't guaranteed anything.  Told her she could be terminated tomorrow, if I felt like.  Going well so far. 

Do NOT write her a reference. If you choose not to press charges then you are already doing her a massive favour. You don't want to get mixed up in referring a thief.

Good decision bandit1010 - I hope it works out for both of you. If i was you i would insist on her doing something about her gambling problem. Tell her that if she want to keep her job she needs to stop gambling and deal with the problem and if you find out she is gambling again her again that her she will lose her job.

That is the sensible thing to do.

She is attending GA.  Part of the deal.  I did speak with both of them together, her husband isn't too happy either.  I really believe this is going to work, and I keep ten years worth of experience and proven performance for  about $5000.  That makes me feel a whole lot better.
