The virus and betting College Football

Thank you, somebody had to say it.  I mean I see enough idiots arguing about anything that can be turned into a partisan argument.  Somehow a global pandemic has become a hot button political issue.  I'm all for talking about how the protests likely contributed to the increased numbers, and the overall effect that could have on the early lines.  When somebody mentions they think Covid is fake, they automatically get cataloged into my little memory bank, this way I dont have to worry about being influenced by any of his CFB takes.  It might sound harsh, but when Clemson has already come out and acknowledged that their confirmed cases are up to 37 right on the cusp of when some really tough decisions will have to be made... Well there's just no reasoning with somebody at that level of delusion

I can handle all baseless backlashes. Not one rebuttal to the facts I post.

So my current beliefs on a CFB season. It can be played in the Big10. The numbers support it. There are those in control who may not let it happen anyways and I'll leave it at that.

Down South a whole different situation as this virus continues it's march across the entire WORLD. But this is late June, a lot happens in two months, look at hard hit states like Mich., athlete number of positives almost NON-DETECT. Same for most of reported Big10 returning athletes. Two months ago grim and despair. Almost all athletes who test positive never know they have it. Lots of anti-bodies to be gained a small silver lining. Really surprised, with all the elderly coaches, asst. coaches out there, we don't have any in the news fighting for their lives. A VERY GOOD THING! THANK GOD!

This thread started out great , focused and informative . Let's see if we can get it back on track.

Uni , you bring up a good point about coaches , and assistant coaches . I hope they are taking

appropriate precaution as they are much needed starting on 7 /6 when Fall practice begins.

I think that rather than just focus on how many players on a team test positive , a better

gauge of a teams capability to deal with Covid and the quality of their preparation for

their season is this...... What is a teams plan to contain the spread to limit or to minimize

lost practice time for the players and do they have a plan in place if any of the coaching staff

affected . I believe that the teams plan for , and are most able to contain the spread , will

be the teams I will want to look at for a wager .... If ...... we have a College Football season.

Next week we should get a better indication of how teams will handle this.

ESPN is reporting that 14 players tested positive on Friday .

This brings their total cases to 37 or approx. 1/3 of their roster.

Puts into a nice chart how small or large the risk is by age group.  Honestly if the NCAA just came out and said sorry this isn't worth the risk & we feel not playing is in the best interest of every coach and athlete --- I would understand and respect that.  But if you want to follow data & science then they should feel pretty comfortable playing & just testing/isolating those who require it as they should with the flu each year. 

Looking for a team in hitch your bankroll to this season? Clemson has 37 known positives, probably more that had it previously..... team won't even need to practice social distancing by the end of july lol.

I'm going to get the last word on the government role in a pandemic. 

1) If you take health advice from ANY president, I don't care what party, you need your head checked. These guys have law degrees, or none at all. Listen to the doctors on the task force.  Do I think Trump could lead better by example & not downplay a novel virus so much? Absolutely. 

2) You guys realize that Obama had a far worse situation on his hands in '09, and we were spared a catastrophic loss of life because people aged 60+ had been exposed to previous H1N1 influenza strains earlier in life, had developed antibodies, thus less severe illness right? The H1N1 strain is the same responsible for the Spanish flu that wiped out millions of people. 61 MILLION in the U.S came down with the '09 strain of H1N1 in a 12 month span, and it still circulates and kills today. Do I blame him for that? Not at all. 

3) MY POINT --- There is literally nothing a president can do to stop these viruses. Some are just able to put a better spin on it.  The reason influenza vaccines suck so much is because the virus is able to change the way it looks to the immune system & bypass it.  No presidential action will stop that lol.  Be hopeful of a really good vaccine as coronaviruses don't change their appearance like influenza viruses do to trick your immune system.  If not, then buckle up because at some point you, your significant other, your kids, etc are going to contract covid-19.  You cannot & will not stop a global virus that is likely to be 10x more widespread than we know about.   

If you want to be mad, be mad at your friend, your neighbor, your classmates, your co-workers, ANYONE who refuses to wear a mask & is out at the bar, restaurants, protest, rally... any large gathering really having close contact with others.  We don't need a president to help us put a mask on even if he refuses to do so himself.   Every national guideline out there gives recommendations on wearing a mask.  The reason isn't necessarily to protect yourself, it's so those asymptomatic carriers (probably the ones throwing the biggest fits about needing to wear one) don't go creating even wider spread of covid-19. 

My money is on our pal Longhorn Hoosier to get the last word on this .

Haha probably true, but look I'm just trying to provide this forum with a perspective that not many can offer.  Perspective from a provider at one of the best hospitals in this entire country, from a person who takes care of covid-19 patients every shift, and from a (usually) healthy human being who contracted covid-19 in March and is just now feeling near "normal." In fact, I just had a 3 month CT scan this week that showed near resolution of disease finally.

To piggyback off my last post, you look back to the '09 flu pandemic -- the people who used hospital resources, the people who died from that were young adults. We damn sure didn't lock down college campuses... Why? Ehhhh it's just the flu we get it every year. No big deal right? Plus young people don't care about this stuff.  So get used to seeing these astronomically high daily cases as covid continues to burn. 

I think it's a little overboard and misguided to be talking about suing universities if a student falls ill when they're just as likely (if not more likely) to die from influenza each year.  As of early May, which is an eternity ago when dealing with a novel virus, those aged 15-24 were slightly more at risk to covid-19 then seasonal influenza (0.55 death per 100,000 vs 0.47 death per 100,000).  With what we're learning about younger people driving the spread, and often being asymptomatic, I have to imagine that figure is significantly lower now.  In short, cancel football forever & board up campuses because those will never be safe again. 

All that being said, I'd totally understand if we decide 'hey it's still too new, we don't know enough, not worth the risk over football.'  No questions asked, move on to 2021.

Well Done and Congratulations . Having been in the Health Care field myself,

( although not in patient care ) , I have a high regard for the dedication and

 effort that our health care professionals provide us each and every day.

These are stressful times for those who work in the industry and we should

be very thankful for all that they do. We are learning more about this virus every

day . However , until we contain the spread , in an effort to protect the most

vulnerable among us , the risk to all will continue to be significant.

I am hopeful that we can get to the point where we can safely see sports and other

public events return soon , as well as a beginning to repair the economic damage

to the citizens and governments of the world. We have a long way to go in in that

regard , and we as a Nation , have yet to feel the total economic inpact that Covid 19

has caused , which is far greater that the prospect of not having College football

this fall.

Watched a video on youtube about covid-19 by Tony Robbins who was interviewing a numbers guy.

50% of covid deaths have been over the age of 85.

92% of deaths from covid-19 are over the age of 65.

I am of the opinion we are not going to stop the spread of covid-19,.....and I work in health care.

So, when politicians get up and say we need  (or we needed) to lock down because it is saving lives, this is a falsehood.  And governments now are largely no longer saying that is what is needed to be done.

EVERYONE will be exposed to it, and how strong and good your immune system will determine whether you shrug it off, develop symptoms, and/or die.

In the USA and most developed countries, those who were pro-lockdown did so with the idea that we wanted to not overwhelm the hospitals....how it got out there that we could hide out from the virus for 3 months and have the virus give up and go home or somewhere else it is a false message,...it is a blatant falsehood.  Now, some of us may have natural immunity...they say that those whose ancestors went through the Plague are immune to HIV for example....but we are not going to bunker down and lock all of our doors and have the virus go away, or not eventually get exposed, it is faulty reasoning.

Typically viruses have a shelf life of a year or two, which, we can theorize why that is, but we really don't know why it comes, or why it goes.  The stats show a lessening of deaths...could it be that it has killed all the weak ones?...or is the virus threat abating or are we getting better at treating the illness?...like most of this virus thing we can only make educated guesses, and even among the most educated in virus theory and epidemiology there is disagreement.

As far as football goes, there will people that get sick that are football players during the football season ABSOLUTELY....for universities, they and the  players need to be aware of that and decide if they want to play, or not.  They could just as easily get sick staying home with mom cooking chicken soup every day for them  as they would playing football with their colleagues.  Next to no one of those players will have a life threatening situation if contracting it.

The idea of placing blame on someone for contracting a virus after the fact is low consciousness thinking, the "blame-game",....everyone makes choices using the information at hand, and hopefully if they are political leaders, they do so with the idea of best serving their constituents.  It is not a political party or a president's "fault"....it is an issue of humanity, of which we are all a part of.

In many crisis times, the "experts" often get it wrong...I believe breakthroughs will be made because of what has transpired, but they may, as they often are, come from someone thinking outside of the box, or someone not considered an expert.  Throughout history this has happened, with those breakthroughs breaking conventionality and are often ridiculed initially. 

I know weve been saying this since Feb, but I think we'll have a much better sense if any type of CFB is possible this year.  The past few weeks have been completely insane, between the spike in Covid and Protests.  The decision makers will have the benefit of seeing these other leagues resume play, and then basically do a cost benefit analysis, and see if it's reasonable.  Im crossing my fingers that things go perfectly for MLB and the NBA, which will help sway public opinion and make the decision easier to justify.  After seeing the impact Covid has already had on Tennis and Golf (literally the two most socially distant sports, and after 10 days half of their athletes have already tested positive for Covid.  The same is true for these CFB teams that just returned to an empty campus, and before they even get the chance to really be around eachother 30-40 players on these teams are already in quarantine...

Unfortunately CFB def has the most challenges of any other league's, since not only is it a contact sport with 90 players on a team, but THEY DONT GET PAID.  When the NCAA is worried about potentially losing 5-6 billion dollars if they dont play, it's much harder to justify exposing amatuer athletes to the potential risks. That decision becomes almost impossible to justify if these school presidents deem that they cant open the campus back open to all of the regular students. If these schools start talking about another semester of online classes, that could be the death blow for CFB this season.

I believe both Indigo999 and ALopez14325 make some good points. Can't agree to all but do agree lockdowns needed only when hospitals are nearing capacity. The economic damage too great. I look at Wisconsin who had their lockdown halted by a judge. They were doomed the news said!! I thought so too! They have done better than most. Why? I believe they have "responsible" residents. Nebraska has never had a lockdown or a mandated mask wear. Are they just lucky? Governor stressed wearing a mask was the right thing to do, left it up to the people. Again, believe they have responsible residents. Doesn't take that much to really weaken that virus if you look at it!

I also believe the Coronavirus Meter wouldn't be here if election wasn't near. I know, talking politics again, but it is inescapable. My father died last year of old age, he was in his 90's. I wonder how many of those recorded virus deaths in nursing homes were folks who would have soon passed anyways or were already passing. Sounds coarse I know, but that's life.

The stigma/fact that NCAA players don't get paid is real. I agree, how can you play football with no classes?

This country should be focusing on our lives and current issues, MOVING FORWARD!! Not watching some meter we can do little about. Let the health care folks watch the meter. Let the health care folks be the ones to say, TIME TO REIN IN OUR FREEDOMS in this location. And I say folks plural, should be a non-political committee of health care folks. But it is election year, the media will not stop bombarding us, steering us into the ground.

Indigo you bring up some good & actual kind of scary points.  It’s kind of frightening on the medical side of it, how little we knew in March & how were still kind of learning as we go.  

a lot of the stories you’re hearing about destroyed lungs is probably due to our inability to know how to treat this disease.  Patients were coming in with oxygen levels in the 40’s.  For any other disease we intubate and adjust ventilator settings to fix that issue.  Well those settings were destroying patients lungs, not the virus.

Id also venture a guess that the lung issues some younger people are having are directly related to the vaping habits of younger folks. 

I did see that study as well that 80% of deaths in Europe are over 75 years old.  I think that’s a big statistic when talking about not only sports returning but spectators as well.

Double up there are no “first wave” or second wave or 17th wave lol.  Idk why people get so fixated on waves of a virus.  

define “worse.” Are more cases considered bad? In Michigan studies guesstimate we missed 80% of cases in feb/March.  So just because there’s testing now doesn’t mean it’s worse.  If anything rising case numbers are going to show a better situation as in a far lower death rate.  In February we were worried about young people, today it’s consistent with influenza deaths —- meaning much older people are most at risk.

And the health care system has narrowed down how to treat it.

Feel bad for those who got it early, many died, many have suffered like Hockeynight has. 

How many health care workers down south are reported incapacitated now by the virus. Remember two months ago ALL the health care professionals going down?? Not happening like that anymore. Believe me, if it was, media would report it, over, over, and over again.

They shut down NCAA sports back in March, when there were hardly any cases.  Now they want to play in the fall when there are tons of cases? Young people don't take it seriously, if there are football games played, even if they are no fans at the stadium, they will still tailgate and have watch parties.
