I'm not going to tell you what to play, but if you think Bama is a sucker bet than my recommendation would be to lay off the game entirely. Don't just blindly bet Arky as a contrarian play. As for me, I don't think Vegas will be making any tackles or catching any passes in this game. I have already placed a max bet on Bama.
I agree. Every week that some strange lines or games occur, posters panic and pick contrarian picks the following week to try to guess what Vegas is doing. Games aren't fixed! Does the public take a beating when a fraud gets exposed (Miami/FSU), sure they do. It has nothing to do with Vegas fixing games. Vegas makes juice. If they win the side oppo the public, then that's gravy! If you think Arkansas is for real, bet them. Don't over think it! It still comes down to 18-22 year olds and whether they handle the pressure.
Alabama held Penn St to 3 points.
Arkansas allowed 24 to a georgia team with no AJ Green.
Saban will have D focusing on Mallet. Alabama will not look ahead or underestimate Arkansas. Alabam wins this game. If you don't like the points, then bet ML. Taking Arkansas is simply trying to guess an upset that isn't going to happen. I'm not a fan of either, but I bet on Alabama alot!

This game really comes down to Alabama's ability to 'harass' 'disrupt' 'effect' - whatever you want to call it - Ryan Mallett, if not outright sack him. If Alabama does that, and controls the clock on offense by keeping him off the field, the Tide wins by double digits. WILL they do that in Saturday's game? Entirely different question.
But if they cannot get consistent pressure and he makes them pay when they blitz - Bama's secondary, though talented, is inexperienced and they have not seen a QB anywhere close to Mallet's quality nor the receivers that Arkansas has. In this scenario (one where Mallett is not constantly harrassed/sacked) Mallet & receivers will win most of those battles & Arkansas can stay in the game and even pull off the upset. Fayetteville is also a great home field in these kinds of big games.
I agree with not over-thinking this game, because I really think it comes down to this one aspect, especially when considering which team covers 7-7.5....we'll see which is the case on Saturday....

I'm not sure why Texas Tech is on that list. I was on Texas, and they seemed like the obvious play to me. In fact, other than being the home team, I couldn't think of a single reason to bet the Red Raiders. I thought Texas -3 was an absolute gift. With all due respect, none of the teams in this list is Alabama. Right now Bama is probably the most consistent product in all of sports betting. Don't argue with it - profit from it.
WE are in agreement to the T with Bama Sportsfreak! i have watched every possible game I could and the top ten etc, and Bama is a professional team compare to ANYBODY in the country!!!

i'm not saying this is true, but what if... Bama really is so good that this entire season is a formality (again, i am not saying that is the case, but what if)... if that were the case, are we foolish for approaching it that way?
i certainly did not come into the season believing Bama was head and shoulders above everyone... but one of the most important things you have to do when betting on CFB is figure out as quickly as possible who the best teams are, and how much better than everybody they are...
in my many years of betting this game, there have been very few times that i was this impressed with a team so early in the season...
i think Bama is going to smash Arkansas, to the tune of about 41-7... not close, not a contest, and never even a glimmer of hope for anyone who bets on Arkansas...
I get what you are saying, but the public doesnt move lines. The public doesnt bet anything down or up.

The only time you don't want to run a neutral book is when you want to get "short" or get "long" for a reason. Whether you like it or not, Vegas is taking risk on for this game and it's against the public in a big way. This is similar to the Cal-Nev game last week. Vegas took on a position then. They are taking one on here.
It wasnt only that game. In footbal - but unlike any other sport - you find Vegas taking a position on a game more often than not. You cant make an argument - a good argument I should say - for anything else.
Good post and its nice to hear someone give Ark a chance....any team can win on any given day.

Alabam wins this game. If you don't like the points, then bet ML. Taking Arkansas is simply trying to guess an upset that isn't going to happen. I'm not a fan of either, but I bet on Alabama alot!
Read a lot of this same hogwash about the Iowa/Zona game this past week.
I am taking Arkansas, but I am not trying to guess an upset. I am playing the spot - and its a fucking fantastic one for a Razorback backer. Like most of the sheep learned this past week, the spots are extremely important. Why else did everyone on this board lose their ass this past weekend? They couldnt pick out a good spot if it hit them in the face.

There is Alabama and Ohio state, and then there is the rest of college football. Arkansas just played a soft ass Georgia team and barely squeeked by... Alabama is going for the jugular in this game.

@JC ... Interesting take. If you get a second, accept my friend request. I'd like to PM you about being a part of my 'Cram Session' column for Covers this week.

And Bama to date has only 2 sacks which ranks 117th in the nation..

sorry for the confusion, but you have misunderstood... when i said the public, i am simply referring to anyone who bets money... the Nebraska line closed at (-3) because "anyone who bets money" was betting it on Washington...
but also, don't believe that the books have such a disrespect for what most people call "public money" that they don't even move a line when it comes in truckloads... "public money" will move a line...
the Nebraska / Washington line was a line all week that people looked at and said, "why is this so low?," and many of them even bet on Washington "because it was so low"... ???
that line was stupid and it was easy... and i feel the exact same way about the line on this Bama game... it's a stupid line, and it is doubly stupid if the public (i.e. anyone who bets money) allows it to stay under 10...

I would also take Bama at -13.5, and the reason I do is because they will cover it. In fact last week I said I would LIKE Bama at anything under 2 TDs, and I would LOVE them at anything under 10. And I do so for many reasons, not the least of which is that Arky is larely a media driven unproven commodity. Arky is this year's Ole Miss from last season, and this game is just like the Bama @ Ole Miss game from last season). Ole Miss was a product of the media, not a proven commodity on the football field, and that is exactly what I said in my writeup for that game.
For most of the Bama players that will line up to play against Arky, playing in a hostile road environment is yesterday's news. These guys are for the most part battle-tested road warriors. From Bama's standpoint, that this game is being played in Arky will have absolutely no effect on the outcome of this game whatsoever. Bama will dismantle the Razorbacks with surgical precision on Saturday and win by at least 3 TDs.
I like your analysis about the game, maybe because i'm an Alabama fan. But i do believe the Razorbacks will run into a wall at times throughout the game, with Mallet getting through the secondary of Alabama some setting up field goals.
Alabama already knows what to expect, the Razorbacks don't. Saban has not put everything on the playing field for film to be watched. This week i believe he will unleash some and Alabama comes out 3 TDs +.
So give us (me) a link so i can read your write-up.

to answer your question, yes some do bet like that. they see a line come out, unreasonably low, and automaticly they assume that Vegas has set a trap. I have seen multiple threads in this forum this week about this very subject. People tend to try to overthink things, and outsmart Vegas, when in reality they are outsmarting themselves.

and Arkansas playing ole miss last year has nothing to do with now, Arkansas is a much different team now. The reality is, how could Arkansas all the sudden get so much hate? I mean, you say they have proven nothing, but in reality Alabama hasn't proven anything other than they can score as much as Wake Forest against Duke and beat an AWFUL PSU team and by awful I mean will lose 4 games this year, and in the Big Ten, thats really embarassing for them. Now Arkansas went on the road and pretty much ran UGA in the whole scheme of things and now is being belittled? odd
Arkansas is not a much different team. They are almost the exact same team Bama destroyed last season by 4 TDs except they have 1 more year of experience, which means they should be better.
Bama has proven pretty much everything there is to prove thus far. They won the national championship last season, and they've dominated every team on their schedule this year covering every 1st half, 2nd half and game spread. Not really possible to do much more than that.
Arkansas, on the other hand, beat Georgia on 3 gimme TDs on severely blown coverages. Had it not been for that they would have lost by 2 TDs to that disaster of a football team otherwise known as the Georgia Bulldogs. That team is a juggling act on a unicycle in rush-hour traffic, and Arkansas was extremely fortunate to escape with a road win.
Your inablility to discern the difference between a proven commodity like Alabama, and a media fiction like Arkansas will cost you money this week.

This thread has really come upon a great question: all opinions are sought....when do you know that a line is set because of a true desire to get equal action on both sides & moved accordingly, versus when 'Vegas' or 'books' decide to take a chance on one side or another to set a 'trap' line to fleece the public (and simultaneously expose themselves to loosing $$ to sharp money/syndicates recognizing the bad line and/or the sometimes not too occasional cover of a team that shouldn't have at that particular number) versus a situation when early money comes in on a side skewing the line such at it appears to be a 'trap' instead of true movement in response to a betting anamoly?
Unless you're in the biz...how do you know? Simply because the line is X off of yours? How do you know?...All opinions appreciated....
GW
PS
I understand why folks want to take Bama here. Beware. They're going into a hornets nest this week in more ways than one...not to say they're going to lose (though it could happen) but it will be a tough, tough game between two extremely determined teams each possessing of the capability to win.....
