Golden Knights vs Capitals NHL betting picks and predictions: Fast start for Cup rematch

Oct 10, 2018 |

With a break in the MLB postseason action we turn our attention to the ice, where we get treated to a Stanley Cup rematch as the Capitals host the Golden Knights on Wednesday night. Will the Knights exact some revenge, or will the Caps overwhelm them on home ice. We break down the best ways to wager this puck battle.

Vegas Golden Knights vs Washington Capitals (-145, 6)

As mentioned in the early week preview, the Knights will need to start fast and get an early goal to take the Capitals’ crowd out of the game and as the eighth ranked first period team from a season ago, they’re more than capable of doing so. The Capitals meanwhile, were the ninth best first period team last year and are tops in that category again this season. Mix in Verizon Center crowd who will be fired up for the Cup rematch and you can expect fireworks early. The goaltenders Marc-Andre Fleury and Braden Holtby will look to make a difference, that won’t matter in the opening 20 minutes.

Prediction: First period Over

These two teams know each other quite well after a five-game showdown in last season’s Stanley Cup Final. It was a series that was largely dominated by the Capitals, but that’s not to say the Knights didn’t take some diligent notes on Washington for this season. In what figures to be a high scoring affair it’s wise to sift through and find someone with great value on either team to find the back of the net. And the answer to that question for tonight, is Washington’s TJ Oshie. The Caps’ winger already has three goals this season and at +220 for him to score on Wednesday, it’s one of the best prop bets on the board.

Prediction: TJ Oshie goal (+220)

The Golden Knights have struggled in the offensive zone this season, but it is only a matter of time before the likes of Max Pacioretty, Paul Stastny and William Karlsson start finding the back of the net. Those struggles should could be resolved as early as tonight. The Knights are primed to break out and keep up with a prolific Caps’ offense that is even more motivated on home ice. The Over has hit in four straight games and is 11-1-1 in Washington’s last 13 games playing on three or more day’s rest, while Vegas has gone over in four of its last five and in four straight against Eastern Conference opponents. The Over trend continues here in a game that should reach the 6-goal mark at the very least.

Prediction: Over 6

The line opened at a whopping -180 at some shops in favor of the Champs but has come down substantially to -145 as of Wednesday morning with more room to move leading up to puck drop. The Knights struggled in the Cup final against a very good and determined Capitals side and while the and novelty/aura surrounding their opening season seems to have worn off, this is still a very good team and are getting a ton of value in this spot. Vegas would also love to get some retribution, but the Capitals have too much depth up front for the Knights to contend with. Take a bit of juice with a Washington play in regulation.

Prediction: Capitals (-160)
