There’s a different feeling in the air in BC these days.
Fresh off their third straight win of the season, the BC Lions are back over .500 for the first time since early June, and Buck Pierce’s team is showing no signs of that momentum crashing to a halt against the Calgary Stampeders.
With second place in the West in sight, my Stampeders vs. Lions predictions break down why the home team will pull away inside BC Place.
Here are my CFL picks for Saturday, October 4, with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m. ET on TSN.
Stampeders vs Lions prediction
My Stampeders vs Lions pick: Lions -3.5 (-120 at BET99)
The BC Lions defeated the Toronto Argonauts 27-22 last week, improving to 8-7 and suddenly putting a potential home playoff game back on the table.
BC is now set to face a Calgary Stampeders team that has cooled off, dropping each of its last three contests by double digits. Calgary has surrendered an average of 40.3 points per game over that stretch, which included coughing up 527 net yards to Nathan Rourke and the Leos.
Although the Lions' defence remains imperfect, the pass rush has been much improved over the last month, spearheaded by All-Star Matthieu Betts. The 2023 Most Outstanding Defensive Player of the Year has collected nine sacks (NINE!) over BC's past three games, and he’ll have added help inside with defensive tackle DeWayne Hendrix expected back after missing last week with an illness.
BC may also be getting reinforcements on offense. Slotback Jevon Cottoy practiced in full on Friday and could potentially return from an ankle injury, adding another element to an offense that already includes receivers Keion Hatcher and Justin McInnis, who rank first and fourth, respectively, in league receiving yards. Leos RB James Butler also paces the league on the ground, and he should shred a Stamps’ defense that is allowing a league-worst 112.6 rushing yards per game.
The Lions prevailed 52-23 in Calgary just two weeks ago, and I expect a similar outcome on Saturday in Vancouver.
Stampeders vs Lions same-game parlay (SGP)
BC is 4-1 ATS in its last five games against Calgary, and the Stamps have failed to cover the spread since Week 13.
Although the Lions fell short of this team total last week, they still managed 27 points despite Rourke throwing three interceptions. BC had no trouble moving the chains, but turnovers prevented them from eclipsing 30+ points for the eighth straight contest.
This team total was listed at 32.5 last week, so I’m jumping at the chance to grab them at this number.
