The third-place finishers at the 2018 World Cup are co-favorites to win Euro 2020, but some would argue they are still priced too long. Pre-tournament match odds
Odds for Belgium to win
Belgium opened in November as favorites on the Euro 2020 odds board, but have drifted slightly from +450 to their current odds of +550. They now sit third behind France and England.
Here’s how Belgium’s odds to win the tournament have looked over the last eight months, as compared to the other tournament favorites.
Belgium team preview
What more needs to be said about Belgium? This squad is absolutely loaded. The offensive firepower put on the pitch exceeds that of any nation on the planet. After an all-time best showing at the World Cup in 2018, the Red Devils have only continued to improve. They romped their way through qualifying, winning all 10 matches while scoring an incredible 40 goals (4.0 per match!) and conceding just three (0.3 per match).
Even in Nations League against top-tier opponents Denmark, England, and Iceland, they won five of six matches, scoring 16 goals and conceding just six. With Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne, and Romelu Lukaku up front, absurd attacking numbers like that are to be somewhat expected. The front trio in Martinez’s 3-4-2-1 is world-class and all three are in their prime entering the tournament.
This team is not all attack though! Keeper Thibault Courtois rebounded this season after a down year following a transfer to Real Madrid. The Golden Glove winner at the 2018 World Cup enters the European Championship as one of the best at his position on the planet. The trio of Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen, and Jason Denayer make for a complementary backline that has size, speed, and control playing out of their own end.
Belgian player to watch
Name: Romelu Lukaku
Lukaku is the second favorite to win the Golden Boot behind only Harry Kane at odds of +800. Judging by Belgium’s path, they are likely to be significant favorites up until the final — should they make it that far. Even with an early exit, Lukaku can get to the magic number of six goals. Within the last calendar year, Belgium scored 13 goals in four matches against group opponents Russia and Denmark. Finland — the worst team in the group — conceded the most goals of any team in qualification. Just in the group stage alone, Lukaku is in line for plenty of opportunities and a great top goalscorer bet.
Player prop to bet: Lukaku top goalscorer (+800)
Best bet: Belgium to win the tournament (+600)
Belgium should be the stand-out favorite to win the title. Their squad is loaded with talent, they have the best attack in the tournament, and the recent dominance/familiarity over group opponents will put them on the easiest path into the knockout stage. This team is a nightmare to defend and bettors should be considering backing them each step of the way in addition as their main bet to win the tournament at odds of +600.
