Italy vs Switzerland predictions

Moneyline Pick

Italy began their tourney with an impressive victory over Turkey and is looking to get back to being one of the world's best squads after shockingly failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.

Manager Roberto Mancini has been front and center of the Italian resurgence as the Azzurri won all eight of their games at Euro 2020 qualifying. They have continued that form with nine wins and three draws since qualifiers.

Switzerland is an improving nation that has reached the knockout stage in their last three major tournaments, including advancing to the Round of 16 at Euro 2016.

The Swiss outplayed Wales in their Euro 2020 opener on Friday but had to settle for a 1-1 draw. Neither team threatened on offense in the early going and while the Swiss generated more scoring chances in the second half, their lack of clinical finishing ability hurt.

That could be Switzerland's biggest weakness against a very stout Italian defense. The Swiss are very solid on defense in their own right, but their lack of punch up front can be exposed against high-level competition.

Although this Italian team is not the ultra-conservative brand of previous years, they are still at their best in the back. Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci are one of the top center-back pairings in the world and their midfield is filled with players that know how to control the ball.

With Ciro Immobile and Lorenzo Insigne in fine form, this is an Italian squad that can score the crucial goals needed to emerge with a victory. Possessing a big edge in talent and home-field advantage with this match taking place in Rome, back Italy to win.

PREDICTION: Italy (-150)

Italy to record a clean sheet - Yes (-110)

Turkey failed to score against Italy on Friday as the Azzurri controlled possession and kept them pinned in their own end for most of the match.

That makes nine straight wins that Italy hasn't conceded a goal in. That stretch includes clean sheets in victories against Poland and the Netherlands.

Although Swiss forward Haris Seferovic does a great job of holding the ball up front, he isn't the most fluid of finishers, notching four goals in his last 15 international matches.

That will place the scoring burden on Xherdan Shaqiri. The winger has struggled with injuries, scoring just one goal in more than 800 minutes with Liverpool this season.

Unless those two get going, Switzerland will find it tough to find the back of the net against emerging Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and a tight defensive system. Back Italy to pick up another clean sheet.

PREDICTION: Italy to record a clean sheet - Yes (-110)
