Side analysis
This Sunday sees Arsenal welcome Leicester City to the Emirates in the final game of the day. Whisper it quietly but this could be Arsenal’s year. No, not the Premier League title, I don’t have a time machine back to 1998, but they are strong favorites to finish in the Top 4 and earn Champions League football for next season.
Heading into the weekend, Arsenal were clear of Manchester United, and by the time of kickoff they’ll have four games in hand over the Red Devils. That should fill their fanbase with enormous confidence that they’ll finally get back into the Champions League, but the truth is that they should have their eyes on more than that, with a third-place finish realistic.
There are a couple of reasons why Arsenal have performed so well this season and they all give the North London club a great chance of beating Leicester on Sunday. Firstly, manager Mikel Arteta’s commitment to refreshing the team. Arteta hasn’t been afraid to get rid of big names, previously it was Mesut Ozil but most recently it was Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the January transfer window.
He stripped the Gabonese striker of the captaincy and sanctioned his move to Barcelona. Aubameyang had been brilliant in an Arsenal shirt but in recent seasons he looked complacent and lazy. By getting rid of that deadwood and putting his trust in youngsters Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith-Rowe, and Gabriel Martinelli it’s installed a sense of urgency and youthful exuberance in the team.
This side isn’t haunted by the dismal failures of Arsenal teams of the recent past and are free to express themselves. Nobody embodies this more than Martin Odegaard who is finally showing the majestic performances that saw him hailed as a future star when he was just 16.
The other thing that has been crucial in Arsenal’s success this season is that they’ve been free of European competition. Not having to trek all over Europe has allowed their players to rest and recuperate between Premier League games and perform to a higher standard and avoid the need to rotate as much. That’s something that is going to come into play here. It will have been a whole week since Arsenal last played, beating Watford, but Leicester played on Thursday when they beat Rennes 2-0 in the Europa Conference League. If it wasn’t for that then I’d think Leicester stood a chance here but the volume of games will be catching up with the team and they don’t have the depth to get through it without disruption.
It's been a disappointing season for Leicester, with the club unusually finding itself in the bottom half of the Premier League table. There were some newspaper headlines claiming that Brendan Rodgers faced the sack but it always felt unlikely and the team has improved recently. They also have a reasonable chance of a good run in the Europa Conference League, with this game sandwiched either side by the first and second leg of that competition against Rennes.
Leicester will be in their favored 4-3-3 but they continue to be without star players. Ryan Bertrand and Jonny Evans have been missing for a long time but they are going to be without Jamie Vardy again too. Vardy’s absence means we should see Patson Daka get another successive start, although there’s a chance he’s replaced with Kelechi Ihaenacho, who scored midweek.
Both teams have great creative talent, with Leicester’s James Maddison and Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard both capable of feeding their forwards but it’ll be the midfield where this game is won. With Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey matching up against Youri Tielemans and Wilfred Ndidi, it’s going to be a real physical battle but it’s one I’d expect Arsenal to come out on top off.
Back Arsenal to win their fifth Premier League on the bounce, they’re in great form and come into this game refreshed and with far fresher legs than Leicester.
Prediction: Arsenal (-200)
Over/Under analysis
We’ll be backing Over 2.5 goals here, there are lots of talented forwards on display and the trends all point toward it being a high-scoring clash.
The Over 2.5 has landed in 53.8% of Arsenal’s Premier League games at the Emirates this season including three of their past four. Leicester, too, love a high-scoring game, with a huge 75% of their games on the road finishing with three or more goals. Whether they’ve won, lost, or drawn there’s been a huge amount of games on the road for Brendan Rodgers side this season with the Under landing in just three away games.
Don’t worry about the -163 odds, it isn’t the best price but the trends make it clear that it should land.
Prediction: Over 2.5 (-163)
Best bet
I can’t believe I’m writing this in 2022 but Alexandre Lacazette is having a renaissance for Arsenal. The 30-year-old Frenchman is one of the Gunners' elder statesman and one of the players who has been with the club the longest, having arrived from Lyon in 2017.
He was touted as being the answer to Arsenal’s goalscoring woes but 53 goals in 148 paint a picture of a talented striker but one who isn’t a killer in front of goal. Lacazette has been moved around the attack for Arsenal since he arrived, often being shifted so others can shine. Since Arteta sidelined Aubameyang it’s been Lacazette playing in the middle, and given a long run of games he’s really shown what he’s capable of and is quietly having a brilliant season.
By playing in front of three forwards made up from Saka, Odegaard, Smith-Rowe, or Martinelli, he’s become the ultimate provider. A selfless worker who brings others into play and helps them play at their best. In just 20 games, five of which were from the bench, he’s been responsible for seven assists.
Against a Leicester back four that’s still missing some of its better players in Ricardo Pereira, Jonny Evans, and Wesley Fofana, I think there’s a great chance he adds another assist to his tally. I’ll be backing him to get Over 0.5 assists at +300.
Pick: Alexandre Lacazette Over 0.5 Assists (+300)
