Sometimes, the predictable happens and it's fine. That will happen tonight when two solid defenses face anemic offenses as the Hurricanes and Wild come Under the 5.5 total.

The Carolina Hurricanes and Minnesota Wild have been two of the better teams in the NHL this season, but both come into tonight’s game with two-game losing streaks.

Minnesota has been shutout in two straight games, and the Hurricanes were shutout in their most recent game, are both teams snake-bitten? My Wild vs. Hurricanes predictions favor the Under.

My analysis
The Minnesota Wild and Carolina Hurricanes are two of the better defensive teams in the NHL, and both have struggled to find offense.

The Hurricanes, dating back to the start of the new year, have been the worst team on the man-advantage. In their last 10 games, the Hurricanes have only converted once on 25 power-play attempts. Since January 1st, they’re skating to a horrendous 4.6% success rate.

On a positive note, the Hurricanes have done a great job on the penalty kill, so at least they have that going for them. Tonight, they should be able to frustrate the Minnesota power play, which hasn’t converted in its last three games.

Carolina has been scoring 2.82 goals per game over their last 17. The lack of scoring has a lot to do with their man advantage not coming through, but even-strength play won’t be much easier tonight. The Wild allow the third-fewest high-danger chances against per 60, so the Canes will have their work cut out for them.

Filip Gustavsson will start for the Wild tonight, and he has skated to a 2-2-0 record with a .903 save percentage and a 3.26 goals-against average over his last four. Those numbers aren’t spectacular, but Gustavsson has put together a pretty strong regular season, and with Carolina’s struggles as of late, I am confident he can keep the puck out of the net.

Mikko Rantanen hasn’t produced as much as the Canes had hoped, with one goal and one assist in his last five games.

Goals won’t come easy for either side tonight.

Hurricanes vs Wild same-game parlay (SGP)

Under 5.5

Matt Boldy 3+ shots on goal

Mikko Rantanen 3+ shots on goal

The Wild should have plenty of desperation to their game tonight after being shut out in their most recent contest.

One player who has remained consistent at putting pucks on net has been Matt Boldy. Boldy has had a minimum of three shots on goal in all five of the Wild’s last five games, and he should be able to do the same tonight. He hasn’t scored in his last eight, so I’m anticipating some extra aggressiveness.

Rantanen didn't generate much in the team's most recent game, only putting up one shot on goal. However, in the four games before that, he put up 4, 5, 3, and 5 shots on net, respectively, so the looks are coming for the recently acquired forward. He knows he needs to produce, so I think he’ll put some more pucks at the cage this evening.
