The Avalanche and Golden Knights boast their fair share of offensive stars, but it's defense and goaltending that's carried them to recent Stanley Cups and made their head-to-head battles low-scoring. Our NHL betting picks will lean on those trends.

The Vegas Golden Knights host the Colorado Avalanche in what in my estimation is the best game on Saturday’s NHL slate. The NHL odds see it as a virtual coin-flip with a total floating between 6 and 6.5.

Low-scoring affairs have been a common trend between these two teams, as there have been six or fewer total goals scored in 10 of their past 11 meetings.

Will we see another low-scoring outing, or can the goals pick up? Find out in our free NHL picks for Avalanche vs. Golden Knights on Saturday, November 4.

Avalanche vs Golden Knights predictions

It shouldn’t be all that shocking that we see so many low-scoring games when these two powerhouses meet. Both blue lines are excellent and finished last year ranked in the Top 11 of the league in expected goals against per 60 minutes (xGA/60) at 5-on-5.

Two strong goaltenders are also set to square off in this matchup as Alexandar Georgiev is slated to go for the Avalanche against the Golden Knights’ Adin Hill. Georgiev has been tremendous this season, posting a 6-2 record with a .915 SV% and 2.40 GAA through eight starts to earn some early consideration in the Vezina Trophy odds.

There have been six or fewer total goals scored in five of those eight outings. Meanwhile, Hill continues to ride his momentum from last season’s Cup run.

Through six appearances between the pipes this year, he is 5-0-1 with a .923 SV% and a 2.11 GAA. Like with Georgiev, the Under has been a strong trend for Hill, as there have been six or fewer total goals scored in four of those six starts.

These are the past two Cup champions, so it is no surprise that the offenses are just as good as the defenses, which is why we are catching plus-money on the Under 6. With that said, Georgiev’s and Hill’s recent form behind these excellent blue lines should outweigh that offensive threat.

Special teams should also be on our side here, as both clubs rank higher in penalty kill percentage than they do in power play percentage.

Avalanche vs Golden Knights same-game parlay

Under 6.5

Avalanche moneyline

This game is a pick ‘em due to Vegas’ 11-game point streak to open the season and its home ice advantage. With that said, the underlying metrics have suggested that the Avs have been more impressive in their 7-2 start.

At 5-on-5, Colorado ranks higher than the Knights in both expected goals for per 60 minutes (xGF/60) and xGA/60. We have yet to see that Cup hangover hit Vegas, and at this rate it probably isn’t going to happen, but it will lose a game eventually.

If there’s any team that’s up to the task, it’s the Avs.

Avalanche vs Golden Knights moneyline and Over/Under analysis

The Knights opened as a -115 favorite before the market brought the game to a pick ‘em. I think that this line will only move further in Colorado’s direction, although I would be shocked if the Avs go any lower than -120.

That brings us to the total, which opened at 6.5 and remains at that number. With that said, I like the Under 6 at +102 more than laying the juice at 6.5, although I think there is still value in that number if you wish to go that route.

Finally, in a surprising trend, the road team has won five of the past six matchups between these two clubs.
