With the San Francisco 49ers kicking off Week 1 of their preseason at 9 p.m. ET, one question needs to be answered — will Brock Purdy play tonight?
Injuries are beginning to pile up on both sides of the ball, which is only breathing new life into the substation theory. As a result, head coach Kyle Shanahan will play it safe with his franchise quarterback, who already missed significant time last year due to a severe turf toe injury.
The bulk of starters for San Francisco will remain sidelined tonight, which is why our 49ers vs. Titans predictions suggest fading them in Week 1.

Will Brock Purdy play tonight?
The short answer: No, Brock Purdy will not play tonight.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan traditionally rests key starters during early preseason contests to avoid unnecessary risk, and won't take any chances on QB1 amid a growing list of injuries. Expect him to be holding the clipboard and wearing a headset while backups Mac Jones and Kurtis Rourke split reps.
This has nothing to do with his training camp performance, either. Purdy has had a strong few weeks and has shown the 49ers' brass his injuries are behind him. He's taken all first-team reps while rebuilding chemistry with Deebo Samuel Sr., and connected with second-round rookie De'Zhaun Stribling on a 50-yard touchdown during a joint practice against the Tennessee Titans early this week.
Purdy has reportedly embraced a deeper leadership role as he enters Year 5 — we'll likely just have to wait until Week 1 of the regular season to see his development.

Injuries mounting for 49ers (already)
The list of injuries continues to grow for the 49ers as we close in on meaningful football.
Purdy will be without receiver Ricky Pearsall (knee) for the entire season after surgery to repair his PCL, while veterans Mike Evans (quadriceps) and Christian Kirk (calf) have been sidelined at practice. However, both should be ready before the regular season begins.
Elsewhere, George Kittle (PUP-P, Achilles) was seen running routes prior to Monday's practice but still isn't ready to return. His early-season availability is still in question.
Star tailback
On the defensive side of the ball, Nick Bosa is considered week-to-week after missing recent practices due to soreness/tendinitis in his right knee. His availability for Week 1 is also in question.
All this begs the question — is the electric substation that shares a property line with the practice facility to blame?
What's causing all the 49ers injuries?
For years, the 49ers have consistently suffered higher-than-average roster attrition — and no team has been as injured as San Francisco.
Injury concerns have led fans to embrace a bizarre, viral conspiracy theory: the electromotive force emitted by the substation next door is negatively affecting players. Put on your tinfoil hats, right? Or is there some truth here?
The theory became such a massive talking point that GM John Lynch addressed the
While the electromagnetic claims remain completely unproven, San Francisco's multi-year struggle with soft-tissue and structural injuries remains a real headline year after year.
The substation has been adjacent to the practice facility for 40 years — you can draw your own conclusions there.

Brock Purdy fantasy football outlook
Despite the pass-catching injuries surrounding him, Purdy remains a high-floor fantasy option thanks to Kyle Shanahan's play-calling system. In consensus 2026 fantasy drafts, Purdy carries an Average Draft Position (ADP) around 75th overall (seventh round) and is widely ranked as the QB12.
While Purdy has a host of new weapons around him, mainly the catch radius of Mike Evans, I'd still look elsewhere due to his extensive injury history. Other quarterbacks I'd take over him that share similar ADP: Dak Prescott (75th-85th overall pick) and Caleb Williams (65th-75th overall).
If you can get Purdy at a bargain, potentially in the eighth or ninth round, I'd take a stab at him — his dual-threat ability is always worth a look.
