Oklahoma vs Alabama predictions

Here are our early thoughts on the spread and total for this week’s game. We will have a full game preview (with a best bet and SGP) later in the week.

Early Oklahoma vs Alabama spread pick: Alabama -6.5

After a shocking loss on the road to start the season, the Alabama Crimson Tide have run their way through a tough schedule to get back into clear favorite status to make the College Football Playoff and win the SEC. They have won eight straight games, with four of those coming against ranked opponents.

The Tide have been especially good at home this season, going 5-0 both straight-up and against the spread. While the Oklahoma Sooners are a perfect 3-0 on the road this year, they are about to get a much tougher test in Tuscaloosa. They also lost a neutral site game to Texas this season.

The Sooners have a great defense, but that low-scoring style will only play into Alabama’s hands. We just saw it last week against LSU, where the Tide won 20-9 while in control of the entire game.

Quarterback John Mateer got off to a hot start for Oklahoma this season, but has struggled big time the last four games. The Tide have one of the best passing defenses in the country, allowing only 164.1 yards per game through the air. They have more interceptions than touchdown passes allowed.

Alabama will be able to dominate the script of this game and cover at home.

Early Oklahoma vs Alabama total pick: Under 46.5

These are two of the better defenses in the country in terms of scoring. The Sooners rank seventh in the nation, allowing an average of 14.1 points per game. The Tide rank 13th, allowing an average of 17.2 ppg.

Seven of the nine games that the Sooners have played this season have gone Under. Both games that hit the Over were vs. uptempo offenses with little reliance on defense in Mississippi and Tennessee.

The Tide have played a few high-scoring games, but they came in similar situations, like when they were playing Tennessee. However, even the Vols were only able to score 20 points in Tuscaloosa. Vandy was held to 14, and LSU only mustered up nine points.

With Oklahoma unable to move the ball well through the air, I just do not see how they score enough to make this game hit the Over. The Sooners defense will also do enough to keep it low-scoring.
