Oklahoma State vs Boise State predictions

When Boise State and Oklahoma State met back in 2018, the Cowboys earned a 44-21 victory as 1-point underdogs. That Broncos team had Brett Rypien under center, Ezra Cleveland and John Molchon blocking for him, and Alexander Mattison running behind him. All four of those players went on to play in the NFL, and the team also had three Mountain West first-teamers on the defensive side of the ball — with one of them being Curtis Weaver, who was drafted by the Cleveland Browns.

This Boise State team is definitely a solid one, too, and it should probably be undefeated right now. The Broncos got off to a great start against the Knights in Orlando, but they ended up falling apart and they got completely rattled by a crazy UCF crowd. However, Oklahoma State is another team that offers some real challenges for Boise State, and the Cowboys have a great shot at stealing a win in Idaho in this one.

While Mike Gundy’s teams are known for their offenses, this Oklahoma State team actually has a rock-solid defense. Last year, the Cowboys were 34th in the nation in points per game allowed, as they gave up just 23.5. This year’s team returned eight starters from that unit and they are giving up just 19.5 points per game through two contests this season.

Oklahoma State did lose Trace Ford, a dominant edge defender, for the year, but freshman Collin Oliver is a great replacement for him. He has serious burst off the edge and should make life difficult on Hank Bachmeier in this one. While he causes problems at the line of scrimmage, an experienced secondary will look to make plays on the ball.

The Cowboys should have no trouble moving the ball offensively. Spencer Sanders is a remarkable dual-threat option at quarterback and he’ll surely make some huge plays with his legs in this one. Boise State gave up 573 yards of total offense against Central Florida in the opener, so this defense is very attackable. The Cowboys aren’t quite as explosive as the Knights, but they have what it takes to make plays and put up a lot of points here.

When these teams met in 2018, the game ended up going Under the total but the teams did combine to score 65 points. That number would make this Over a winner and it wouldn’t be shocking at all if both teams end up scoring 30-plus points in this game.

While Oklahoma State’s defense is better than it has been in recent years, it’s still a bend-don’t-break unit that will allow Boise State to move the ball. That means the Broncos will put a decent number on the board, even if they do fall short of the Cowboys' output.

The Over is 6-1 in Boise State’s last seven games in which the team is coming off a cover as a double-digit favorite, and 7-4 when the Broncos are coming off an ATS win.
