Underperforming in any NCAA football conference is cause for concern. But when you're an SEC disappointment, the backlash is deafening.

This is the reality the Florida Gators face as they enter the 2026 season with renewed expectations for a winning season. They entered 2025 with the same aspirations, only to wind up humbled by inconsistent play and a brutal gauntlet of opponents en route to a four-win campaign that fell well short of their Vegas total.

Here's a look at the recent history of Florida win totals, along with predictions on whether the Gators will surpass or fall short of their 2026 number of 7.5:

I love the Jon Sumrall hire and I really like the coaching staff he assembled especially new offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner. While I’ve upgraded the Gators five points in my power ratings, I don’t see many sure-fire wins to double last year’s four-win total. My ratings have them listed as an underdog in six games.

Rob Paul

It’s hard not to believe in a Jon Sumrall-coached team. He has a career .782 winning percentage, and if he can weather Florida’s mid-season storm of a schedule, he has a chance to push for 8+ wins. That will be dependent on the QB finding his form, though, whether that’s Aaron Philo or Tramell Jones Jr.

Luckily, offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner proved himself as one of the best run game designers in the country at Georgia Tech, and inherits an All-American candidate in running back Jadan Baugh. Faulkner also reunites with wide receiver Eric Singleton Jr., who gives the Gators a spicy wide receiver trio alongside Dallas Wilson and Vernel Brown III.

The defense should be the driving force for the team, though Florida leads the country in returning defensive production (77%). Kamran James, Myles Graham, and Bryce Thornton give Brad White all-conference talents on every level.

Colby Marchio

Sure, the Gators bring in their exciting new head coach, Jon Sumrall, from Tulane. Sure, they avoid LSU, Texas A&M, and Tennessee, while their non conference schedule is a breeze, but where exactly are these eight wins coming from?

Out of the gate, I can see two wins. Fine. After that, I still see four certain losses against Texas, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, and Georgia. The rest of the schedule can probably be labeled as toss ups. I do think the moves this program has made over the last 365 days are the right ones moving forward, but asking for 8+ wins in Year 1 under Sumrall feels like a lot.

Florida’s offensive system should be more explosive, and it has a strong front seven despite lacking ideal depth on the defensive line.

The arrival of Jon Sumrall and Buster Faulkner coupled with the retention of key pieces, the more manageable schedule and improved strength and conditioning plan, should result in Florida being capable of doubling its win total from a season ago, although it’s hardly guaranteed.

UF will have to be fortunate on the injury front and get an upset victory away from Gainesville to achieve an 8-4 record.

*Florida played just 11 games in 2017, falling short of the sportsbook minimum requirement of 12 games played.

🔑 Key takeaways

  • Not even close: Florida fell a whopping 3 1/2 wins shy of its 2026 preseason total, the second time in three years the Gators came up short by 3+ victories. It's the largest cap between Vegas and the final result since 2013, when Florida was projected to win nine games but earned just four Ws.

  • Changing sentiment: From 2009-18, taking the Over produced diminished returns, only once yielding plus money (and that +100 in 2016 barely counts). But the sheen is off the Gators program, and it shows in the odds trends: the Over has been a plus-money play in three of the past six seasons, cashing just once.

  • Leaving bettors wanting: Strangely, Florida has had no Over/Under cashes three times since 2016. It pushed on its win total 10 years ago, and had bets voided in 2017 due to a reduced schedule stemming from Hurricane Irma, and again in 2020 due to COVID.

How Florida win totals are priced

It might feel, based on recent results, like Florida's 7.5 regular-season win total is a bit optimistic; the betting sentiment certainly aligns, with the Over at +130 and the Under at -156.

But the arrival of Jon Sumrall as head coach has significantly boosted the vibe level in Gainesville, and more than one national college football expert has the Gators tabbed as one of the biggest sleepers in the country.

Sumrall has three conference titles in four seasons as a coach, and the addition of Buster Faulkner as offensive coordinator should give Florida's offense a completely different look (led by Faulkner's star Georgia Tech QB Aaron Philo.) The SEC is no picnic, but the path to 8+ wins is there if Sumrall and Faulkner get the team off to a strong start.

Look for early optimism to quickly shrink the gap between the O7.5 and U7.5 prices.

Did You Know?

The Gators are 23-9 SU at home since the start of the 2021 season, but are just 5-18 SU away from Gainesville over the same span.
