A tough game awaits Vanderbilt as they hit the road to face Texas.

Are the Commodores the best team in the SEC? You could certainly make the case, as they are one of five undefeated teams remaining in college basketball at 16-0, matching the program’s best start to a season in school history.

However, a Longhorns team that has started to play better lately could pose a test. Texas will enter with plenty of momentum after a road win at ranked Alabama. It should culminate in an entertaining affair.

I break it all down in my Vanderbilt vs. Texas predictions and college basketball picks for Wednesday, January 14.

Vanderbilt vs Texas prediction

Vanderbilt vs Texas best bet: Texas moneyline (+185)

I’m firmly on the Mark Byington bandwagon, and I not only believe he’s the best coach in the SEC, I also think he’s among the best in the country.

So what I’m about to say is painful, but I’m on the Texas moneyline for my best bet. It’s an ideal spot for a Horns team playing its best basketball, and they own a few key tactical advantages.

Vanderbilt’s offense is built to stress drop coverage, with Tyler Tanner and Duke Miles manipulating ball screens and creating clean looks for rollers and poppers. That’s exactly where Texas can get aggressive with its physicality and make this a whistle game.

If this turns into a free-throw war, it favors Texas and its elite free-throw attempt profile. Vanderbilt will score. It has an excellent scheme and coach, but is it enough to overcome the foul pressure and late-game environment? The price is worth it to find out.

Texas is also equipped to punish Vanderbilt’s switching ball pressure. Tramon Mark and Dailyn Swain can turn those switches into matchup-hunting possessions that frequently end with a score at the rim or a foul.

Texas has the cleaner late-game path: home crowd, size on the wings, and a free-throw profile that travels.

In a close one, I’d rather be holding the side that can manufacture points without needing to make shots, especially when the team that needs to make shots is walking into a raucous environment. I’d play this to +150.

Vanderbilt vs Texas same-game parlay

I started my same-game parlay off with the Over. It’s a high total but my projection is aligned closely with it.

One of the prevailing themes of my best bet handicap is that we could see this turn into a foul fest because of how well Texas can draw them against a hyper switching defense. That lends itself to the Over.

It also lends itself to the second part of this parlay, Matas Vokietaitis to eclipse 14 points. He can do this in two areas. One is by simply getting to the line as he draws the most fouls per 40 of any Texas player.

Additionally, he is the focal point on big rolls and cuts to the basket where Vandy has allowed nearly an average of a point per possession.

  • Matas Vokietaitis Over 14.5 points

Our beyond the arc SGP: Tanner dishes dimes

I added Tyler Tanner to go over his assists total in my longshot parlay for a lot of the reasons stated in my best bet.

Even though I expect Texas to win, you’re not going to cut off the Vandy offense completely. Tanner should have tons of success manipulating drop coverage and finding rollers to the basket for scores.
