St. John's and DePaul hook up tonight in a Big East clash, with both teams heading in opposite directions.

The Blue Demons have lost three straight, while the Red Storm have won seven straight.

Find out why I'm laying the points with the visitors in my St. John's vs. DePaul predictions and college basketball picks for Tuesday, February 3.

St. John’s vs DePaul prediction

St. John’s vs DePaul best bet: St. John's -10.5 (-110)

St. John’s is a team that has appeared to figure things out lately, and I projected this spread around -13. This feels like a frontcourt game. When St. John's can play through Bryce Hopkins and Zuby Ejiofor and just pound possessions into extra shots, DePaul is the kind of opponent that can get buried.

The matchup is pretty clean in the numbers. DePaul’s offense wants to get out in transition and score off second-chance points. They may get some of the first, but it’s hard to imagine they’ll overcome what’s waiting for them when forced to play in the halfcourt. The Red Storm are holding mid-range scores to 0.67 points per possession, post-ups to 0.63 PPP, and pick-and-roll involving bigs to 0.85 PPP. Those are the core areas that the Blue Demons want to score through, and it’s difficult to see that happening much against a defense that is simply better at defending that stuff.

On the other end, as mentioned, the St. John’s bigs can take over. DePaul is giving up 1.01 PPP on rebound-and-scramble and 1.07 PPP in transition, and St. John’s is elite in both of those areas. Much of that is generated from Hopkins and Ejiofor dominating on the glass and at the rim. I expect them to do just that. Once the Johnnies get out and run off these punches (literally, physically overwhelming play), it’s easy to see this one get to double digits quickly.

St. John’s vs DePaul same-game parlay

Ejiofor’s assist angle is live because DePaul overhelps inside and struggles to clean up scramble situations, which naturally leads to dump-offs and kick-outs when Zuby catches on the move or off short rolls. Hopkins’ scoring comes exactly from the areas. If the Red Storm is going to cover this evening, there’s a good chance this is hitting too.

St. John’s vs DePaul SGP

  • St. John's -10.5
  • Zuby Ejiofor Over 2.5 assists
  • Bryce Hopkins Over 13.5 points

Our beyond the arc SGP: Storm surge

Let's add the Under for the long shot. It makes sense because DePaul’s best offense comes when the game gets messy, and St. John’s is built to prevent that. If the Johnnies control the glass and get back in transition, DePaul is stuck in the halfcourt, where their efficiency drops.
