If the St. John’s Red Storm want to make the NCAA Tournament in consecutive seasons for the first time since a three-year run between 1998-2000, they’ll likely need a strong showing in their conference tourney.

However, the Seton Hall Pirates would love to burst St. John’s bubble – and make a little noise of their own – when they face off in the Second Round of the Big East Tournament.

Sharp money and line movement report

By Patrick Everson

Seton Hall opened -1.5 at PointsBet USA, briefly dipped to -1 and is now out to -2.5 as of 12:15 p.m. ET today. “Great two-way action. Almost a perfect 50/50 split in bets placed and money wagered, very slightly favoring St. John’s,” PointsBet’s Patrick Eichner said. The total is down to 149.5 from a 152.5 opener. “Heavy action on the Under, with about 85 percent of tickets and handle.”

Betting trend to know

Red Storm are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games vs. a team with a winning straight-up record. Find more NCAA betting trends for Seton Hall vs. St. John's.

Against the spread (ATS) pick

There was a point this season when St. John’s had won seven of eight Big East games—a span the included wins over Villanova and Connecticut. The problem is the Red Storm also have losses to Butler and DePaul.

That said, St. John’s comes into the Big East Tournament winners of two in a row, which includes a regular season-ending 81-71 victory over this same Seton Hall squad. The Red Storm are led by their offense and specifically sophomore guard Julian Champagnie.

Champagnie puts up 19.9 points per game, on 43.9 percent shooting, to pace an offense that ranks 34th in the nation in KenPom’s adjusted offensive efficiency and has been a handful for the Seton Hall defense this season, averaging 23 points in two games against the Pirates.

On the other side, Seton Hall has hit a skid at the worst possible time. The Pirates have dropped four games in a row straight up and against the spread. During that stretch, Seton Hall has allowed opponents to shoot 47.9 percent from the field, which included 51.8 percent from the Red Storm in last Saturday’s meeting.

The defense isn't alone, however, as the Pirates’ offense is also struggling. Seton Hall has scored 60 points or fewer in five of its last eight games, and while the Pirates put up 71 points in the game against St. John’s, they shot just 40.7 percent from the floor.

On top of that, Seton Hall has failed to cover in six straight games and are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games overall. It’s hard to fade St. John’s in this spot.

PREDICTION: St. John's +1.5 (-110)

Over/Under Pick

Another problem for Seton Hall has been scoring the basketball (Not a good thing when playing basketball games). The Pirates totaled 60 points or fewer in five of their last eight games, and as mentioned above, while the Pirates put up 71 points against St. John’s last week, they shot just 40.7 percent from the floor in that game. In that eight-game stretch, the Under is 6-2.

For St. John’s, the Under has cashed in three straight games thanks to that improving defense, and the Under cashed in both meetings between these two teams this season. With a total sitting at 151 and an inconsistent Pirates, this trend is a good bet to continue.

PREDICTION: Under 151 (-110)
