Not only has UConn been suffocating teams on this eight-game win streak, but it's also done a great job of taking its opponent's best scorer out of the equation. With that in mind, our college basketball picks expect a rough night for Devin Carter.

The top-ranked UConn Huskies are rolling, seeking their ninth-straight win when they host the Providence Friars.

The Friars appear to have turned the corner themselves, ripping off three straight wins following a four-game slide. That hasn’t moved sportsbooks much, as Providence is a 13-point underdog in the college basketball odds.

With such a large spread against the visitors, I'll look to fade one of their top scoring options. Find out who in my free college basketball picks for Providence vs UConn on January 31.

Providence vs UConn picks and predictions

Since dropping their conference opener, the UConn Huskies have been all business, racking off eight straight wins. The defense has been a stonewall, limiting opponents to just 59 points per game over the last four, with none topping 67 points.

Across those games, UConn has limited three of the Top 4 scorers in the Big East below their season averages — which is fitting for this matchup as they face the conference’s second-leading scorer in Devin Carter, who’s averaging 18.7 points per game.

Carter is playing his best stretch of hoops this year and is coming off a 29-point performance in a win over Georgetown. He's also topped his 17.5 scoring total set for tonight in five of his last six.

But back to that Huskies’ defense. Last game against Xavier, they limited Quincy Olivari, tied for third in conference scoring at 17.8 points per game, to 14 points on 5-for-14 shooting. And Big East leading scorer Jayden Epps, pumping in 19.1 points per contest, was limited to 16 on 5-for-19 shooting — including 0-for-5 from downtown.

The Huskies hold opponents to 64.2 points on the year (24th), with teams shooting a paltry 39.6% from the field (21st). In three career games against the Huskies, all last season, Carter mustered a total of 27 points on 8-for-27 shooting.

Even as his role and game has expanded this year, this will be the blip on his current scoring binge.

My best bet: Devin Carter Under 17.5 points (-108 at Caesars)

Providence vs UConn same-game parlay

Devin Carter Under 17.5 points

Tristen Newton Over 1.5 made threes

Tristen Newton Under 6.5 rebounds

With Carter’s bet on the board, I'm also targeting UConn’s leading scorer for this SGP.

Tristen Newton is coming off a 22-point, four-rebound, four-assist night against Xavier. Most impressive is his work from deep, as he hit 4-for-7 against the Musketeers, the second-best number of makes he’s had in a game this season. His line for Wednesday is peculiarly low at 1.5 makes, considering he’s cruised past this total four times in his last five.

While his shooting will standout, I’m targeting the Under for Newton’s rebounding, which is set at 6.5. He leads the Huskies with 6.4 boards per game but has crossed this total just three times over the last 10.
