UConn vs DePaul Odds, Picks and Predictions: Targeting Secondary Options in Blowout

The UConn Huskies face off against the DePaul Blue Demons in college basketball action tonight. Connecticut is the defending national champion and the No. 1-ranked team in the country while DePaul has easily been the worst Power Six program.

College basketball odds for this clash reflect the disparity between these schools with the Blue Demons coming in as whopping 24.5-point underdogs despite playing at home.

UConn vs DePaul picks and predictions

The Connecticut Huskies are far better than the DePaul Blue Demons. However, it's tough to swallow this much chalk, especially on the road, so I'm looking to target a player prop with my best bet. It can also be hard to back a team's best players in games like this since they don't need to carry the offense and are often given less playing time than usual. 

That is exactly the case with Tristen Newton, who is second on the Huskies in scoring (15.2 points per game) while leading UConn in assists (5.8) and rebounds (6.6) per game. The Huskies are coming off a 25-point win against Georgetown and Newton took just three field-goal attempts in that contest.

Newton also took just three field-goal attempts (and didn't score a single point) when the Huskies clobbered the Blue Demons by 29 points last month. There have been two other blowout victories for UConn this season where Newton logged fewer than 24 minutes and didn't play a big role.

However, the Huskies have another stat stuffer in Cam Spencer and he's seeing plenty of playing time even in lopsided wins. Spencer leads the team in minutes (32.9) and points (15.3) per game while adding 4.6 rebounds and 3.4 assists. Those impressive numbers haven't seen a dent even when the Huskies are playing with a big lead.

In UConn's last nine wins of 20+ points, Spencer is averaging 30.6 minutes, 15.6 points, 4.3 boards, and 3.8 dimes. The points+rebounds+ assists total for Spencer is set at 21.5 tonight, and he eclipsed that number in seven of those nine blowout wins, which includes the previous meeting between these teams when he dropped 20 points and grabbed six rebounds in 32 minutes. 

Spencer had a PRA of 23 and logged 34 minutes in UConn's beatdown of Georgetown on Saturday and I'm banking on another productive game from him tonight.

This is a massive line for a road team and taking the Blue Demons against the spread along with the Spencer prop creates a nice multiplier. 

For what it's worth, while the Huskies have an incredible scoring margin of +25.1 ppg at home, that number dips to +7.8 ppg on the road.. This could also be a bit of a look-ahead spot for them since their next two games are against No. 4 Marquette and No. 17 Creighton.

Guard Jalen Terry is just 6-foot-0 but somebody needs to get rebounds for this terrible DePaul team and he's been the one getting the job done for the last few weeks. He has pulled down 4+ rebounds in seven of his last eight games.

The Huskies opened as 24.5-point favorites with the Over/Under at 141.5 and neither line has seen much movement as of noon E.T.

It's easy to see why UConn is laying so many points in this matchup. The Huskies are 22-2 and are the No. 3 ranked team in the country according to KenPom while ranking third in adjusted offensive efficiency and 17th in adjusted defensive efficiency. 

Meanwhile, DePaul is just 3-20 and doesn't have a single win in conference play. They are 299th in the KenPom ratings and have been terrible on both ends of the floor, ranking 290th in adjusted offensive efficiency and 277th on defense.

UConn beat DePaul 85-56 when these teams previously met up on January 2. The Huskies are now 10-0 SU and 8-2 ATS in the last 10 meetings between these schools.
