Yonke's prediction: This total is inflated because prior meetings between Butler and Providence have gone to double overtime.

The Big East Tournament Presented by Jeep tips off from Madison Square Garden with a first-round game between the No. 9 Providence Friars and the No. 8 Butler Bulldogs.

Both regular-season meetings between these two teams were thrillers, ending only after double overtime, setting the stage for a wild start to the 44th iteration of this tournament.

I’m targeting the Under with my Providence vs. Butler predictions and college basketball picks for Wednesday, March 11.

Butler vs Providence prediction

Butler vs Providence best bet

Butler vs Providence best bet: Under 162.5 (-110)

The Butler Bulldogs and Providence Friars combined to average 203.5 total points during their two regular-season meetings. However, there’s one important caveat: both of those matchups went to double overtime.

This inflated total is an overreaction to the sheer number of points dropped in those matchups, but only 146 points were scored in regulation during the February 4 meeting.

Both squads played at a slower tempo than usual over the last month of the season, and the first round of this tournament was low-scoring a year ago — all three games cashed the Under while averaging just 134.7 combined points.

Butler vs Providence same-game parlay

Providence informed Kim English that he will be let go at season’s end after accumulating a 47-51 record in three years as the head coach, so we’re dealing with a lame-duck coaching situation here.

Butler had a lot of down points this season, but that’s understandable given the numerous injuries. Leading scorer Finley Bizjack should exploit Providence’s poor defense (187th in adjusted efficiency) as he did in the regular season, averaging 28 points per game in those two contests.

The Friars allow a ton of threes (9.2 per game, 333rd nationally), and Bizjack is Butler’s primary sharpshooter.

Our beyond the arc SGP: Focused on Finley

Butler’s most likely path to a win includes avoiding Providence’s offense from heating up and letting Bizjack slow cook on the other end.
