Duke’s interior edge should decide the game, but Army’s returning guards and perimeter volume give it a route to covering 44.5 points

The team I'm taking to win the national championship begins its season as a massive favorite, and I'm analyzing the matchup in my Duke vs Army prediction ahead of college basketball's opening night.

The Blue Devils will win comfortably, but 44.5 points is a touch too much to lay against a veteran Army backcourt. My top pick takes the points, while the total hinges on whether Duke’s advantage around the basket can carry the scoring.

It's all part of our college basketball picks as a new season begins.

 TOP PICK
Who will win Army vs Duke: Army +44.5

My model makes the Duke Blue Devils a 41.5-point favorite, giving the Army Black Knights a narrow edge at this line. I'm taking them to +42.5.

Duke will win comfortably, but last year’s 55-point rout shows where Army couldn't cover. The Black Knights made 12 of 49 threes while committing 17 turnovers. Meanwhile, Duke scored 26 points off those giveaways while hitting 16 of 37 threes itself.

Duke held opponents to 30.6% from deep over the season, which would have meant roughly three more Army makes on that shot volume. That isn’t automatic, as Ryan Curry must handle Duke’s full-court pressure, and Jacen Holloway needs to give him a driving outlet when defenders overplay the arc.

The Blue Devils will control the paint and glass. Army’s route to covering is avoiding runouts, and the Black Knights can do that just enough.

Covers COVERS INTEL: Curry and Kevin McCarthy made 131 of Army’s 339 threes last season. With both back, Army retains the two shooters most responsible for an offense that led the Patriot League in made threes per game.

Army vs Duke Over/Under pick: Under 153.5

I'm on the Under at 153.5 on any price 50% or better.

Duke boasts a clear interior scoring edge, but Army’s offense is the hurdle here. Duke allowed opponents to recover only 25.1% of their misses and make 9.5 free throws per game last season. That leaves Army heavily reliant on first-shot jumpers, with few putbacks or trips to the line to rescue empty possessions.

Pace is the other concern for the Over. Both teams played around 67 possessions per game last season, while our 152.5-point projection assumes 70. John Scheyer wants Duke playing faster, and who could blame him, as he leads the most talented team in the nation. But even at that higher pace, this is total too much.

Army vs Duke combo

Duke scored 31 fast-break points in last year’s meeting. Army’s returning guards need to handle the initial pressure and get into their half-court offense rather than feed Duke another night of runouts. That would limit both the margin and the number of easy points pushing this game Over the total.

Duke still holds the advantage around the basket, but Army’s perimeter volume can keep it within 42.5 without turning the game into a shootout.
