The San Antonio Spurs are 5-0 on the year, joining the Chicago Bulls and defending champion OKC Thunder as the NBA’s only remaining unbeaten teams. The Phoenix Suns blew out Utah on Halloween night to snap a four-game losing streak.

Spurs vs Suns prediction

Spurs vs Suns best bet: Under 227.5 (-110)

The San Antonio Spurs’ 5-0 record is a bit deceptive. Sure, San Antonio blew out Dallas in an opener that got plenty of attention. And yes, the Spurs are coming off of an impressive win over a good Miami team. In between, however, there’s not much to write home about on the strength of schedule.

But doesn’t mean San Antonio is doing it with smoke and mirrors.

Even taking the schedule into account, the Spurs are second in the NBA in SRS (Simple Rating System). They have the best defense in the league, and impose their will on teams with one of the slowest paces. In fact, the Spurs have gone over just once in their four games — a game against New Orleans that went to overtime.

The Phoenix Suns are a better team at home than on the road by a wide margin. The Suns are 2-1 in the Valley, with a one-point loss to Memphis as the only blemish.

They’ve also been playing better lately. After dropping back-to-back games by an average of 24.5 points, they lost in overtime, in addition to the one-pointer against the Grizzlies, before breaking through against Utah.

Phoenix is without two key players in guard Jalen Green and wing Dillon Brooks. With their oddly-shaped roster packed with three 7-footers, the absences make the Suns play at a slower pace than they probably drew up heading into the season.

Phoenix is smack dab in the middle in pace, with the No. 16 ranking in the NBA, to go with an offense and defense that both rank No. 22 in their respective ratings. They can’t even rely on a size advantage against San Antonio and 7-foot-3 unicorn Victor Wembanyama.

It may not be the blowout that a quick look at the records would indicate, but San Antonio should be able to make Phoenix play at its pace, slowing things down and grinding out a comfortable win, Under the 227.5-point cutoff.

Spurs vs Suns same-game parlay

Devin Booker has been on a heater for Phoenix, scoring over 30 in each of the last four games.

It’s easy to say that the law of averages, combined with the Spurs’ strong defense, will bring him back to earth. We’re staying away from the point total, however.

The Spurs defense isn’t based on choking out one key player. It uses Wemby’s presence in the post to lure opposing offenses into making bad decisions, even if one star player gets to eat.

Cam Thomas and RJ Barrett both had big scoring games against San Antonio, but they did it by shooting much more and passing much less, a habit many opposing guards have fallen into.

Look for Booker to try to carry the Suns offense by himself and pass less.
