NBA Picks for Today
Miami Heat vs New York Knicks
For as good as the Knicks have been this season, the team has had some trouble with playmaking bigs—which is the perfect description of Bam Adebayo. On the season, the Miami Heat star is averaging 20.0 points, 9.2 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game. Miami has been running its offense through him on the elbows, and the team is trusting in him to create for himself and his teammates.
Even with guys returning from injury – including Jimmy Butler – the Heat are still going to use Adebayo as something of a point-center. With that, he has a good chance of eclipsing this rebound and assist total against New York.
The last center the Knicks faced that came close to Adebayo’s ability as a passer was Andre Drummond on January 29, and Drummond had 15 rebounds and two assists in that game. So, even if Adebayo doesn’t match that rebounding total, you should look for him to make up for it with dimes.
PREDICTION: Bam Adebayo Over 14.5 Rebounds + Assists (-102)
Washington Wizards vs Charlotte Hornets
If LaMelo Ball can stay healthy, he should easily win the Rookie of the Year award this season. The Hornets' youngster is averaging 13.6 points, 6.0 assists and 5.8 rebounds per game this season, and he has been magnificent as the lead ball-handler for one of the most exciting offenses in basketball. The biggest issue with Ball is on defense, where he can be beaten pretty frequently off the dribble. That has allowed opposing point guards to put up some good numbers against Charlotte this season.
Ball isn’t the only weak perimeter defender on this team, but it was worth mentioning with a matchup with Russell Westbrook on deck. Westbrook is no longer the athletic freak he once was, but he is still explosive enough to get himself to the basket rather frequently. And in a high-scoring game like this one is expected to be, it’s worth taking a shot on him eclipsing his assist total. There is just going to be a ton of attempted shots in this one, and one would think that the Wizards’ looks will be fed by Westbrook a decent amount.
PREDICTION: Russell Westbrook Over 8.5 Assists (-105)
Sacramento Kings vs Los Angeles Clippers
The Kings have been playing some great basketball as of late, as the team has won three games in a row and six of their last seven. The Kings are now firmly in the Western Conference playoff picture, but make no mistake: Sacramento does not play good defense.
This season, the Kings are last in the league in defensive rating, so they win games because of their ability to go up and down and score, as the team is ninth in the NBA in offensive rating. But that style does open up some opportunities for opponents, and it has often meant that the Kings occasionally get beaten by off-ball wings.
De’Aaron Fox is an excellent point-of-attack defender for Sacramento and Harrison Barnes is sturdy on that end too. But the rest of the Kings can be lackadaisical, and they lose shooters pretty often.
That makes this is a prime matchup for Nicolas Batum, who has been blistering hot from three this year. The Clippers guard is shooting 46.8 percent from deep, and he has feasted on open corner looks. Don’t be surprised if he sees plenty of those here.
PREDICTION: Nicolas Batum Over 10.5 Points (-115)
