The New York Yankees hope to see their bats stay hot as they take on the lowly Colorado Rockies in the series decider on Sunday at Coors Field.
After a stunning loss to the Rockies on Friday night, the Bombers got a dominant start from Max Fried and scored 13 runs. Sunday sees them turn to Will Warren, while the Rockies will hope Antonio Senzatela can somehow find his stride on the mound.
Our Yankees vs. Rockies predictions and free MLB picks for Sunday, May 25 break down the matchup and explain why Senzatela is likely to yet again find himself getting hammered out of the gate.
Yankees vs Rockies prediction
My Yankees vs Rockies best bet: Yankees moneyline F1 3-way (+145 at Caesars)
Antonio Senzatela must wish he could get the Colorado Rockies to only schedule him for road starts. His ERA this season at Coors Field is 7.27, with 41 hits allowed in 26 innings.
And yes, he’s given up some home runs, but that’s not why he’s struggling. Only five of those 41 hits have left the yard.
His problems start with his stuff. With just 25 strikeouts against 239 batters faced, he ranks in the first percentile in strikeout rate and the third percentile in whiff rate.
Not only can’t he generate swings and misses, he can’t avoid getting hit hard either. His barrel rate and hard-hit rate both rank in the Bottom 25% of the league, which is why he’s allowed an xBA of .339 this season. He also can’t keep runners off base, posting a staggering 2.56 WHIP this season with the bases empty.
His first innings have been nightmares at home. He’s got a 2.50 WHIP and has allowed 11 earned runs in 10 starts, with a 9.90 ERA in the opening frame. And in his five starts at Coors Field, the Rockies have trailed after the first inning in four of them.
In his last two starts, he allowed four runs in the first inning in an away start to the Rangers and then gave up three more to the Phillies this past Tuesday at home.
Philadelphia’s first three hitters all reached safely, with Bryce Harper delivering a two-run double before Senzatela could even register an out.
The New York Yankees come into this game having seen their bats come to life on Saturday. They notched their second 10-run inning of the season, after losing 3-2 on Friday night. But in both games so far, the Bronx Bombers have ended the first inning with a lead.
Only the Phillies have had more games with a run in the first inning this season, and they’ve preyed on pitchers who struggle out of the gate. Their lineup is stacked, and with Aaron Judge hitting second you’re only one swing away from a first-inning tally — as we saw yesterday with his solo blast.
And with how poor the Rockies are offensively, one run is likely all they’d need to lead heading into the second inning.
But if you were to bet on the Yankees to win the first inning on the 2-way money line, you’d have to endure juice of -220 to do so. And it would cost you -135 to bet on a run being scored in the opening frame.
That’s what makes the 3-way line a great way to load up against a pitcher who has found it nearly impossible to get off to a good start at home. Back the Yankees to lead after the first inning, without the safety net of a push, at a price that is far too generous to ignore.
Caesars QuickPick: Our Yankees vs Rockies same-game parlay (SGP)
Trent Grisham leads off the lineup against RHP for a reason. The Yankee outfielder is hitting .286 against righties this season, with 10 of his 26 hits against them leaving the ballpark. He went 1-for-6 on Saturday, but four of those ABs came vs LHP.
The two that didn’t? The first saw him smoke a double into center with an exit velocity of 106.5 mph, and the other saw him ground into a double play on what was another very hard-hit ball. With a career-high barrel rate of 16.8% this season, and a favorable matchup against a poor pitcher, I like him to at least get another double here if not a home run.
Colorado leads the majors with 508 strikeouts this season. The .231 xBA for the Rockies is also the worst in baseball, and only the Brewers have posted a lower xSLG this season.
Will Warren overcame a rough April and has posted a 2.38 ERA in May, striking out 34 batters in just 22 2/3 innings. He’s had at least seven Ks in all four of his starts this month and is coming off a 10-strikeout performance against the Rangers in less than six frames, and we’ll back him to reach that plateau again.
