Yankees vs Rays betting preview
Domingo German (0-1, 9.00 ERA): German's first start of the season did not go as planned, with the righty getting hung with the L in the Yankees' 3-1 loss to the Blue Jays a week ago. German made it through just three innings in that one, allowing four hits — including two homers — and walking another while giving up three earned runs. The Dominican will be making just his second start since September 18th, 2019, after a long suspension handed down by MLB.
Chris Archer (0-1, 13.50 ERA): Archer's first appearance of the season came in unideal circumstances, as he was given a tandem start along with Rich Hill. After Hill surrendered five hits and four runs in four innings, Archer came in only to allow another four runs and throwing 52 pitches in two innings. This will be Archer's first start since August 2019.

Betting trend to know
The Yankees are 2-10 in the last 12 meetings in Tampa Bay. Find more MLB betting trends for Yankees vs. Rays.
Well, that's one way to get back on track. After a horrible series against the Red Sox, the Rays returned to Tampa Bay and seemingly enjoyed being home. A two-run second, three-run third and four-run fourth inning helped to give the Rays an advantage they never looked back on, topping the Yanks 10-5.
The Rays got a much better day out of Rich Hill, who went six innings and struck out seven while giving up four hits and four runs. They'll hope a more traditional starting situation will have a similar benefit on Archer, after the two had a tandem start to begin the year.
Not only did Tampa's win over the Yankees cool some nerves about the staff behind Tyler Glasnow, but the lineup showed signs of life, too. Ahead of Friday's game against New York, the Rays had just a pair of batters — Randy Arozarena and Manuel Margot — batting .300 or above, and both were right on .300. Friday saw batters one through seven all register at least one hit, with five batters registering multiple hits, as the Rays put together their best and most complete game of 2021.
Save for a four-run third inning, the Yankees were dead quiet on Friday, mustering seven hits with superstar Aaron Judge missing his second straight game. Though New York's underlying numbers both at the plate and pitching are solid, convincing performances are few and far between to begin 2021. They'll still get the benefit of the doubt in certain spots, whether that's with Gerrit Cole on the mound or with a fully healthy lineup. We're sticking with the home team here, though.
PREDICTION: Rays (+110)
The Rays entered Friday at 5-1 O/U, thanks in large part to their opponents up to that point. While Tampa was bleeding runs, its bats were whimpering as the team averaged just 3.83 runs per game through six games. In game seven, however, the Rays cleared the total themselves in an excellent performance throughout the lineup.
While New York got a solid day from the top of its lineup on Friday, with DJ LeMahieu, Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Hicks driving in runs, the rest of the order offered little assistance at all. While Judge did take swings in the batting cage on Friday, his status is still up in the air. Without knowing he will return for the Yankees on Saturday, it's difficult to feel optimistic about New York's bats coming alive.
Friday's fireworks will make it tempting to lean toward the Over, after a 15-run game, but these are still two teams who have struggled to put together consistent displays at the plate to begin 2021.
