Corey Kluber (4-3, 3.69 ERA): Kluber has struggled in his two starts since returning to the rotation, as he has allowed seven runs over 7.2 innings of work. The righty has also given up nine hits and two homers in that time, while also walking five batters. Kluber just hasn’t been sharp at the moment, but he’ll surely turn things around somewhat soon. He just needs to regain some confidence, and it helps that this matchup isn’t exactly a tough one.
Taijuan Walker (7-9, 4.15 ERA): Walker’s second half of the season has been disastrous, as the righty’s ERA has gone from 2.57 on June 25 to 4.15 as of today. In his most recent start, Walker gave up six earned runs in 4.1 innings of work against the Washington Nationals. The Mets somehow ended up winning that game, but he won’t be as lucky moving forward. One of Walker’s main problems has been the longball. He has given up two or more homers in five of his last eight starts.

The Yankees had two early leads in Friday’s meeting with the Mets, but Jordan Montgomery ended up getting absolutely shelled in the third inning. That completely changed the game, and the Mets went on to earn a 10-3 win. Now, the Yankees will have to quickly put it behind them, as they have lost control of their lead in the AL Wild Card race.
This matchup should be a good one for the Pinstripes, as Walker just isn’t pitching well right now. The righty has completely lost control and he overcompensates by grooving pitches over the plate, which is part of the reason he has given up so many homers. On top of that, the Yankees have a team batting average of .284 with four homers and 14 RBIs against him. Giancarlo Stanton has been especially good against him, as he is 3 for 7 with a double, a homer and three RBIs against Walker in his career. Also, if Rougned Odor plays, he could provide a spark for the Yankees. He’s 6 for 13 with a homer and three RBIs against Walker.
If the Yankees can get a decent start out of Kluber, they should be able to cruise to a win here. Obviously, that’s far from a given with how poorly the righty has pitched lately, but he has to be feeling like this is a get-right opportunity against a Mets team that really struggles offensively.
PREDICTION: Yankees ML (-132)
Over/Under pick
While these aren’t exactly the two best offenses in the league — despite the public perception of the Yankees — this total just seems way too low in a matchup between Kluber and Walker. Sure, it’s a National League game and both of these guys will have to hit in this one, but it’s also a meeting between two pitchers that are ice cold at the moment.
Even if Kluber turns things around, he’s unlikely to post anything much better than a quality start. Meanwhile, if Walker gets started on the wrong foot, this thing could turn badly in a hurry. His struggles tend to come in bunches.
