The Detroit Tigers have won seven of their past nine games, a trend likely to continue tonight with left-hander Tarik Skubal slated to take the mound. Simply put, Skubal is one of the best pitchers on the planet.
He’s posted an ERA under 3.00 in each of the past two seasons, culminating in the AL Cy Young Award in 2024. Skubal’s first start of 2025 was a shaky outing against the powerhouse Los Angeles Dodgers.
However, he has settled in nicely since then, posting a 2.31 ERA over his past two starts, including a scoreless six-inning outing against the Yankees last time out. The lefty's underlying metrics suggest further success is likely.
Skubal ranks in the top half of the league in expected ERA (xERA), expected batting average (xBA), average exit velocity, strikeout rate, walk rate, and hard-hit rate. Detroit will hold the pitching advantage as the Milwaukee Brewers counter with left-hander Tyler Alexander.
Despite a strong start to 2025, Alexander is a prime regression candidate. He ranks in the bottom half of the league in xERA, xBA, average exit velocity, walk rate, barrel rate, and hard-hit rate.
