It’s a getaway in Major League Baseball and with six matinee matchups on the board that means we have MLB props to bet on all day long.
But the highlight of the day takes place at Citi Field tonight in New York, where Jacob deGrom will take the ball when the Mets host the Chicago Cubs. Will deGrom continue his assault on the record books and what is the best way to bet him in this game?
We break down and pick deGrom Day and more with our best free MLB prop bets and predictions for Wednesday, June 16.
Today’s MLB props and picks
Sandy Alcantara Over 17.5 Outs (-155)
The Miami Marlins have a promising young pitching staff and Sandy Alcantara is a big part of that. The right-hander has become one of the more reliable starters in the Big Leagues and he’ll look to live up to that when the Marlins visit the St. Louis Cardinals in an afternoon matinee.
Alcantara has pitched to a 3.39 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP over 14 starts for the Fish this season and the Bottom Feeders’ starter has become an innings eater as well. Alcantara has pitched six innings in 11 of his 14 starts this season, including his last five overall where he has a 2.38 ERA and is limiting opponents to a .203 batting average.
He faces a Cardinals lineup that is very top-heavy and as a result, gets mixed results on a game-by-game basis. Overall, the Cardinals rank 20th in scoring and when it comes to facing right-handers, they rank 27th in batting average and 24 in OPS. Bet on Alcantara to put in another lengthy performance.
DJ LeMahieu Over 1.5 Total Bases (-130)
DJ LeMahieu is getting into one of his patented grooves and he’ll look to keep rolling as the New York Yankees visit the Toronto Blue Jays at Sahlen Field in Buffalo.
The Yanks infielder is hitting .311 over his last 10 games, of which he has six multi-hit games — including the last four games in a row. Now, LeMahieu gets to face Ross Stripling and a Blue Jays bullpen that has would have an easier time getting into Canada than they do at recording outs right now.
Stripling has been better lately but is still allowing right-handed batters to hit for a .308 average against him... but the bigger problem is the Jays’ bullpen.
Since May 20, the Jays relievers rank 26th in ERA, 30th in walks per nine innings and WAR, and they have blown six of nine save opportunities. If Stripling can’t go long it just means more opportunities for LeMahieu to get more knocks.
Cubs Team Total Under 2.5 (-150)
What more can be said about Jacob deGrom that hasn’t been said already? Simply put, he is the best baseball player in the world. His 0.56 ERA is the best through 10 starts in MLB history and while it will be incredibly hard to lower that number, he’ll try to tonight against the Chicago Cubs.
DeGrom looks nearly unhittable at the moment, limiting opponents to a ridiculously low .121 batting average and is striking out 14.5 batters per nine innings. deGrom did have to remove himself from his last game with a flexor strain in his pitching arm, but the MRI came back negative and he should be good to go in this one.
He now faces a Cubbies lineup that has become a little too home-run dependent recently and is really struggling against right-handed pitching — ranking 27th in OPS and dead last in batting average (.193) against righties over their last 13 games — especially against those with plus-fastballs.
And no one’s fastball is more plus than deGrom.
On top of that, a deGrom opponent hasn’t scored more than two runs in a game since April 17. We’re betting that trend continues.
