The New York Mets will look to extend their five-game winning streak as they visit the Texas Rangers to start a three-game set at Globe Life Field on Monday night.
I’ll dig into this matchup of two teams headed in different directions in my Mets vs. Rangers predictions and MLB picks below.

My analysis
Given the difference in expectations and perception, it’s hard to believe the Texas Rangers and New York Mets have essentially the same record right now. If anything, the Mets look like a team on the rise coming into this series, while the defending champions are on the ropes.
The Mets have won five straight and nine of 11. Whether that’s because of a team meeting, because Grimace threw a first pitch, or just because it’s a relatively talented team reverting to expectations, New York no longer looks like a joke. During the five-game winning streak, the Mets are averaging 6.2 runs per game while allowing opponents to score just 2.8 per game.
The lineup for New York is showing more length as of late, bolstered by the addition of J.D. Martinez and the return of Francisco Alvarez from injury. While the rotation will get a huge boost when Kodai Senga returns later this season, it's been solid enough as of late, with David Peterson doing his part in his first three starts of the season.
Peterson looked like he had unlocked his potential in the minors this year, posting a 1.14 ERA over six starts at three different levels in the Mets farm system. The 28-year-old lefty hasn’t been incredible since getting his callup; he's 2-0 with a 4.32 ERA in his first 16 2/3 innings. That’s without seeing Peterson finish hitters the way he has throughout his career, averaging just 3.2 strikeouts per nine innings in this limited sample, compared to 9.5 per nine over his first five seasons.
Surprisingly, Peterson looks like he’s getting something of a soft matchup against the Rangers tonight. The reigning World Series champions are averaging just 4.23 runs per game for the season and have struggled against lefthanded pitching, putting up just a .660 OPS against southpaws this season.
The situation has gotten truly dire over the last month, as the Rangers are hitting just .218 with a .613 OPS overall over the last 23 games. In their recent six-game road trip, they averaged just 2.5 runs per game.
The Rangers can expect to get a good game out of starter Jon Gray, but they may not get much length, as they're still building him up since his return from a groin strain. That will allow a hot Mets offense to feast on a Texas bullpen with a 4.67 ERA on the season. That, combined with a struggling Texas offense, has me betting on the Mets to continue their winning streak tonight.
Mets vs Rangers same-game parlay (SGP)
I like a Mets team that's showing its best form of the season to outlast a Texas squad that isn’t hitting right now. That also has me looking at the Under for my SGP. Both teams have been hitting the Under with regularity lately and both pitchers are capable of solid starts. I’ll also take Francisco Lindor to pick up at least one hit, something he’s done in three of the five games during New York’s recent winning streak.
