Starting pitchers

David Peterson (1-3, 5.59 ERA): Peterson is coming off a tough loss to the Red Sox where he allowed two runs over six innings but received barely any run support. The 25-year-old has already pitched against the Phillies twice this season, getting rocked for six runs in the first meeting but bouncing back with a gem in the second, allowing one run and fanning 10 batters in six innings.

Zach Eflin (1-1, 3.58 ERA): The 27-year-old is fresh off a rough outing against the Cardinals, where he surrendered nine hits and five earned runs before getting the hook midway through the sixth inning.  Eflin has three quality starts in five total starts this season and has pitched to a 1.07 WHIP despite opponents hitting .263 against him.

Moneyline pick

The Mets and Phillies have already met up eight times this season with the Mets winning five times, including a 5-4 victory yesterday. Despite that win, the Mets are just 3-7 in their last 10 games while the Phillies have alternated wins and losses over their previous 10 contests.

The line for today's matchup is close to a pick'em, which isn't surprising given how similar the stats are for both teams. The Mets and Phillies are tied for 16th in the majors with a batting average of .232 while the Phillies have a very slim advantage with an OPS of .676 to New York's .669.

Both starters also have similarities, with Peterson and Eflin capable of looking like studs one day and duds the next. Peterson has been up-and-down this season but showed plenty of promise as a rookie last year, going 6-2 with a 3.44 ERA and a .202 opponent batting average.

While Elfin is posting better ERA and WHIP numbers this year, the fact that opponents have hit above .260 against him in every season since his big league debut in 2016 is cause for concern. He has somehow managed to avoid playing against the Mets over the last two years but he looked shaky against them in 2018 and 2019, pitching to a 5.53 ERA across eight starts.

It might seem like splitting hairs to find a deciding factor in this game but we'll take Elfin's lack of success against the Mets to back the slim underdogs.

PREDICTION: Mets (+100)

Over/Under pick

The Mets came into this season with high expectations for their offense after signing four-time All-Star Francisco Lindor to a 10-year, $341 million contract. But the shortstop has been very disappointing at the plate so far this season, and usually reliable hitters like Jeff McNeil and Michael Conforto have also been ice-cold.

The Mets are 29th in the majors with 3.21 runs per game and they've been even worse lately, plating one or fewer runs in four of their last six games.

The Phillies haven't looked good at the dish either, ranking 26th in the majors with 3.88 runs per game, with that number dropping to just 2.86 runs/game over their last seven contests.

With both teams struggling to generate runs and both starting pitchers capable of the occasional standout performance, we're taking the Under 9.

PREDICTION: Under 9 (-115)
