The New York Mets will try to snap out of their recent slide as they host the Cleveland Guardians at Citi Field on Tuesday night.

Cleveland won the first game of the series and I’ll be taking it to at least cover the run line tonight in my Guardians vs. Mets predictions below.

Let’s take a closer look at the second game of this series in my free MLB picks for Tuesday, August 5.

Guardians vs Mets prediction

My Guardians vs Mets best betGuardians +1.5 (-152 at FanDuel)

The New York Mets can’t seem to get out of their own way right now, having lost six of their last seven games. Last night, the Cleveland Guardians even came to New York and beat them 7-6 after a Brett Baty throwing error sparked a two-run frame in the top of the 10th inning.

New York will look to Clay Holmes to right the ship tonight. Turning Holmes into a starter has paid dividends for the Mets in 2025, though his production may be waning as he gets deeper into the season.

Holmes hasn’t gone longer than 5.1 innings since early June, and has allowed four or more runs in three of his last five starts. That includes allowing four runs on eight hits over 3.2 innings against the San Diego Padres last Wednesday.

Guardians starter Logan Allen is solid and has been giving Cleveland 6+ innings in most of his starts. He’s also a lefty: the Mets are batting just .225 with a .657 OPS against southpaws, significantly worse than their output against righties.

I’m not sure if Cleveland can get a second straight win at Citi Field, but I like the Guardians to cover the run line tonight.

Guardians vs Mets same-game parlay (SGP)

Guardians +1.5

Under 8.5

Jose Ramirez to record an RBI (Over 0.5 RBIs)

I like the value we can get on this SGP by adding in a leg with some negative correlation, but which still makes sense given what I expect from tonight’s game.

Along with taking Cleveland to cover, I’ll also take the Under at a generous 8.5 runs, as I’d be surprised to see a repeat of last night’s offensive output.

But I’m also taking Jose Ramirez to knock in at least one run, something he’s done in three of his last four games.

Since joining Covers in 2022, Ed has offered his sports betting analysis primarily on MLB, NFL, college football, and college basketball games, but is willing to take on any sport.

His betting strategy focuses more on finding line value based on deviations from the market rather than traditional handicapping, primarily shopping between DraftKings, FanDuel, and Fanatics in his home state of Connecticut, though he’s not afraid to do deep game analysis to find profitable bets at any book.

Outside of gambling, Ed is an avid curler who competes in mixed doubles on the World Curling Tour and runs a popular curling YouTube channel, Chess on Ice. That experience has come in handy during the Olympics, when he has proven to be a successful curling bettor as well.

Ed's advice to new bettors is to always open multiple sportsbook accounts and check the odds at each before placing any bet. Successful sports betting is about consistently beating the closing line value, which requires finding spots where one book is offering odds far better than the rest of the market and jumping on those opportunities.
