The Detroit Tigers will enter tonight’s matchup with the San Francisco Giants with the best record in baseball, and in the process, they’ll look to build on a two-game winning streak that has featured excellent pitching.
I’ll explain in my Giants vs Tigers predictions why there’s a fair chance that should keep up, and why Detroit should be positioned to do a bit of damage against a trendy RHP.
Without further ado, here are my MLB picks for Tuesday, May 27.
Giants vs Tigers prediction
My Giants vs Tigers best bet: Tigers moneyline (+105 at BetMGM)
Jack Flaherty had been imposing his will on opponents in his initial return to the Detroit Tigers, but ever since shutting down the San Diego Padres in late April, things have taken a turn.
Flaherty’s xSLG is up over .500 in May, a concerning trend considering he’d already experienced some unsavory declines in that category this season.
He’s given up six home runs in his last three outings, and while his strikeout and walk numbers have been somewhat volatile, this is the biggest reason why he’s struggled to a 6.00 ERA this month.
The San Francisco Giants aren't exactly hitting for power, checking in with an ISO just over .140 in the last two weeks of play. They haven’t enjoyed facing pitchers who will bait them into doing so, either, ranking 27th in OPS to fly-ball pitchers vs. third against ground-ballers.
This is a significant disparity, and while their strikeout and walk numbers are relatively solid, there isn't enough to support their offence.
Flaherty’s walk rate still stands at an acceptable 8.2% even with a poor showing in that area last start, and we can see from his recent performances that even with the home runs, there haven’t been many issues with populating the bases.
That will make this one very difficult for San Francisco, which is hitting just .228 in the last 14 days, and I’m willing to look past the mediocre numbers for Flaherty in what should be an excellent matchup.
On the other hand, Detroit has performed marginally worse against ground-ball pitchers like Logan Webb this season, but it still ranks 11th in OPS and may have the opportunity to find some success at the plate.
The Tigers have been held back by strikeouts in the last two weeks — ranking in the bottom third of the league — and while their power numbers haven’t been menacing either, they’ve at least hit for power all season long.
As a team that's better against righties due to some important left-handed bats enjoying positive platoon splits, Detroit should have the opportunity to hit a strike-thrower like Webb and attempt to exploit him in the power department — which is where he’s most vulnerable.
This will come down to who can land a few big blows in a low-scoring game, and with Webb’s strikeout numbers coming back to Earth a bit and his home run count rising in his past three starts, I think the home team is surely the way to go.
Giants vs Tigers same-game parlay (SGP)
I do have faith in Flaherty to complete six innings even though he’s only done so once in his last five starts. The fact of the matter is, he accomplished this feat last time out against a Cleveland Guardians team that lacks power. Although he did allow three runs, he also allowed just three hits while striking out eight.
Flaherty is regressing in a positive direction, and against a team with such awful splits against fly-ball pitchers, I expect a lot of easy outs on contact — and outs which won’t require the RHP to hunt down strikeouts, which can be costly for his pitch count.
I also love Kerry Carpenter here, one of the bats who will shine against Webb. While Spencer Torkelson leads the team in most categories against ground-ball pitchers, he’s struggled against righties.
Carpenter, who mashes righties, isn’t very far behind with a .293 average vs. ground-ball arms and 17 total bases in 22 games.
