MLB sharp money and line movement report

By Patrick Everson

TwinSpires Sportsbook pegged San Francisco as -148 chalk at the outset and is all the way out to -190 as of 6:30 p.m. ET. The Giants are taking a heavy majority of moneyline tickets and dollars, at 85 percent and 90 percent, respectively. "It's all Giants money. As we are every night, big Diamondbacks fans," TwinSpires trading analyst Zachary Lucas said. The total is stable at 9, with 70 percent of tickets/65 percent of money on the Over.

Giants vs Diamondbacks betting preview

Starting pitchers

Anthony DeSclafani (8-3, 2.91): DeSclafani is having a career year with the Giants and his 2.91 ERA would be the lowest of his career by far. The righty has figured it out in San Francisco, which wouldn’t have been surprising if Bruce Bochy was still around, but sometimes a culture survives from one leader to the next. The 31-year-old doesn’t always work deep into games, but he has given up three or fewer earned runs in all but one appearance this year.

Caleb Smith (2-4, 3.08): Smith was a reliever at the start of the year but has performed well since moving to the rotation. In his last three starts, the lefty has pitched 17 inings and given up just three earned runs. Smith has also struck out 20 batters over his last three outings and will now look to bring some of that stuff to this meeting with the Giants.

Moneyline pick

The last time DeSclafani faced the Diamondbacks was on June 16. The righty gave up just one earned run in five innings in that game, and San Francisco ended up winning 13-7.

Not only has the 31-year-old already pitched well against this Diamondbacks team this year, but he also happens to be 4-2 with a 2.15 ERA on the road this season. Obviously, it’s not easy to pitch at Chase Field, but it means something that he's comfortable pitching away from home. And it helps him that Arizona will be without Ketel Marte, who is hitting .370 with four homers and 21 RBIs on the year.

Smith, meanwhile, has been a rock-solid option in this Diamondbacks rotation as of late, but it’s hard to fully trust him against this Giants lineup. San Francisco has hit 34 homers against left-handed pitchers this season, and some of these Giants have had his number in the past. Buster Posey is one of those players, as he is 4-for-5 with two doubles against Smith in his career. Also, Wilmer Flores is 3-for-11 with two doubles and 11 RBIs against him. Those are not the only two players that are threats to Smith, so don’t be surprised if San Francisco takes care of business on the road.

PREDICTION: San Francisco (-154)

Over/Under pick

The Giants seem poised to plate a few runs against Smith in this game. As previously mentioned, San Francisco has displayed some decent pop against lefties this season. And the Giants also have some key hitters that have had success against him in the past.

Not only that, but the Diamondbacks are also going to be able to score some runs against DeSclafani as well. The righty should be able to give San Francisco a great chance to win this game, but it’s hard to envision him going out and shutting this lineup down completely.

Overall, a third straight Over in this series seems likely.

PREDICTION: Over 9 (-105)
