Cubs vs White Sox Picks and Predictions: Cubbies Take Battle of Chicago

The White Sox came into the season as presumptive favorites in the AL Central and have largely disappointed so far. The Cubs haven't been better, but with Dylan Cease struggling of late, we like the North Siders to complete this two-game sweep.

The Cubs won Saturday’s game and moved into third place in the National League Central, while the White Sox lost ground on the AL Central-leading Minnesota Twins.

Cubs vs White Sox betting preview

Starting pitchers

Marcus Stroman (2-4, 4.71 ERA): Stroman is playing in his third game since returning from the COVID-19 list. His last outing was against the worst team in baseball, the Cincinnati Reds five days ago. Stroman went five innings and allowed two runs on four hits. His best start was May 1 when he went seven scoreless innings in a win against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Dylan Cease (4-2, 4.24 ERA)After a strong start to the season, Cease has cooled considerably. His last outing against the Boston Red Sox was arguably his worst of the season. He surrendered seven runs on eight hits and didn’t make it to the fourth inning. Cease said he might be tipping his pitches and was going to figure out if he is giving opposing batters an edge. Cease is fourth in the majors with 71 strikeouts and first in K/9 at 13.69.

Cubs vs White Sox picks and predictions

Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.

Moneyline analysis

The intercity rivalry between the Cubs and White Sox hasn’t been very competitive. The Cubs did win Saturday, but they hadn’t won since August 28, 2021, prior to that showdown. The White Sox have gone 7-3 in the last 10 games between the Chicago franchises.

That said, the Cubs did show up on Saturday, getting to White Sox starting pitcher Johnny Cueto for a 5-1 victory.

The Cubs will try and make it two in a row with Marcus Stroman on the mound. Stroman is 2-4, but he has pitched better than his record indicates.

Getting offensive support from his teammates might be an issue, however, as the Cubs are batting .236 (17th in MLB) and are middle of the pack in homers, runs, and hits.

Fortunately for them, the White Sox are even worse statistically. They are 20th in batting average at .234 and 22nd in homers, 28th in runs, and 21st in hits.

Even though the Cubs are 1-7 against the White Sox, I like the Cubs on the moneyline to get their second consecutive victory.

Prediction: Cubs moneyline (+155 at BetRivers)

Over/Under analysis

Saturday’s game was a rare Under for both the Cubs and White Sox. The Over is 7-3-1 in their last 11 meetings and the Over is 5-1 at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Though both teams have mediocre offensive numbers, they do know how to hit the Over.

The Cubs have hit the Over in six of their last seven games. They are also 5-1 in their last six versus a right-handed starter. The Over is 3-1-1 for the White Sox against teams with a losing record.

The Cubs are just three days removed from losing to the Reds 20-5. In the second game of that series, the Cubs scored 11 on the Reds.

The White Sox are sending Dylan Cease to the mound and he has not been in good form as of late. He's only pitched beyond the fifth inning once in his last four starts and had total blow-ups against the Red Sox and Yankees. If Cease is tipping pitches, like he thought he was in his last start, you can bet the Cubs are going to take advantage.

Prediction: Over 8 (+100 at BetMGM)

Best bet

The Cubs have better offensive numbers than the White Sox in just about every category. They backed up those stats in Saturday’s game when they won 5-1.

The Cubs outhit the White Sox 10-7 and did so with a depleted roster. They are missing six position players, including four outfielders.

Still, the Cubs are getting hits. While their team batting average is paltry, several individual players are putting up solid numbers. Center fielder Christopher Morel is batting .314 and shortstop Nico Hoerner is hitting .295. Frank Schwindel, meanwhile, has four homers in his last 27 at-bats.

And for all Cease's strikeout prowess, he hasn't been missing bats with as great a frequency of late. He's allowed six, seven, and eight hits, respectively, over his last three starts.

Pick: Cubs get most hits (+220 at FanDuel)
