We could be in the middle of an all-time World Series between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Los Angeles Dodgers. It’s knotted up at two games apiece, and the series will head back to Toronto for at least one game.
And to this point, home runs have played a huge role, particularly at Dodger Stadium. Freddie Freeman walked off that 18-inning marathon in Game 3, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. set the tone in Game 4 by taking Shohei Ohtani deep.
Who will go yard in Game 5? Here are my MLB picks and Blue Jays vs. Dodgers predictions for this pivotal World Series matchup on Wednesday, October 29.
Blue Jays home run pick
Daulton Varsho (+650 at BetMGM)
The Toronto Blue Jays showed how resilient they are by beating Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-2 to even the World Series at two games apiece, just hours after dropping the marathon 18-inning Game 3.
They have done that all year, thanks to guys up and down the lineup who consistently put up good at-bats, and center fielder Daulton Varsho is one of them.
Varsho proved this season that he is more than just a glove, swatting 20 taters with an .833 OPS in just 71 games. He’s continued that in the postseason, hitting three home runs with a .793 OPS through 15 postseason games. And left-lefty matchup be damned, one of those home runs came in Game 1 of the World Series against tonight’s starter, Blake Snell.
Varsho has some of the best numbers against Snell in this Toronto lineup, going 3-for-10 with a double and a dinger. That’s good for a .304 expected batting average and a .699 expected slugging percentage.
What makes this matchup good for Varsho is that Snell throws his fastball more to left-handed hitters, and Varsho has been on fastballs all season long with a .572 xSLG.
Mix in a couple of potential ABs against what looks like a shaky Dodgers bullpen, and Varsho to go yard at this price offers great value.
Dodgers home run pick
Will Smith (+400 at BetMGM)
The Dodgers going against Trey Yesavage is another situation where you kind of have to throw traditional splits out the window. That’s because Yesavage’s splitter has been the absolute neutralizer against left-handed hitters this season, with right-handers having an OPS nearly 300 points higher than lefties.
That has me looking at Dodgers catcher Will Smith, who was absolutely raking this year before a late-season injury kind of threw off his timing at the plate, particularly early in the postseason. But he looks like he’s finding his groove.
Since the start of the National League Championship Series, Smith has been hitting .313 with an .812 OPS, including hitting a three-run shot in the big Game 2 win for the Dodgers.
But Smith is good in this matchup because he doesn’t chase much and hits offspeed pitches very well. He has a .545 expected slugging percentage when facing offspeed pitches this season. If Yesavage can’t locate his splitter, Smith will have a great chance to bang one out of the park.
