There’s a fascinating pitching matchup for Wednesday’s series finale between the Houston Astros and San Francisco Giants. Lefty Framber Valdez (3.53 ERA) gets the nod for the visitors while Logan Webb (2.92 ERA) takes the mound for the home team.

This is expected to be a close one — looking at MLB odds, San Francisco -115 on the moneyline while the total is set at 7.5. The Giants hit left-handed pitching extremely well and Webb has been lights out at Oracle Park, so I take a closer look at their side in my Astros vs. Giants predictions and MLB picks below.

My analysis
Logan Webb has been tremendously effective at Oracle Park this season. The ace sports a 1.71 ERA and 1.05 WHIP across 42 IP and has been tagged for more than two earned runs just once. Considering that lone exception occurred against the mighty Yankees, the best team in baseball, I’m willing to overlook that data point.

Webb’s dominance at home goes back a bit further. Across 371 2/3 IP in his career, he sports a 2.64 ERA and a 2.73 FIP while allowing just 0.41 home runs per nine innings and holding batters to a .278 wOBA.

He faces a Houston Astros lineup weakened by the loss of Kyle Tucker, currently on the shelf with a right shin contusion. The outfielder was in the midst of a career year, posting new statistical highs in essentially every category with a superb 177 wRC+, .415 xwOBA, and .318 ISO.

The Astros have been nothing special against right-handed pitching lately with a 98 wRC+ and .304 wOBA across the last 15 days. They’ve managed just four runs through the first two games of this series and are 10-22 O/U on the road this year, so it’s hard to envision them having a breakout offensive performance against Webb in the confines of his home park.

On the other side, Framber Valdez faces a San Francisco Giants lineup that's hit lefties well this season, posting a 114 wRC+ (eighth) and a .324 wOBA (also eighth). Bob Melvin’s squad has been on fire in the last 20 days against southpaws, upping those numbers with a 139 wRC+ (fourth) and a .359 wOBA (fifth).

Valdez has been fine this season as always, but his contact quality is a bit concerning. He ranks in the fourth percentile in hard-hit rate (49.2%) and the second percentile in exit velocity (91.9 mph) while failing to make batters miss at a high frequency (36th percentile chase rate, 32nd percentile strikeout rate).

Wind is always a factor in the Bay Area — today’s forecast calls for winds of 10.3 to 12.8 mph blowing out to left field. This should benefit the Giants more considering they’re facing a left-handed pitcher and Melvin can submit a lineup card with at least eight right-handed hitters on it, for whom the wind will be blowing out to their pull side.

Astros vs Giants same-game parlay (SGP)

Giants moneyline

Jorge Soler Over 0.5 total bases

Heliot Ramos Over 1.5 total bases

Jorge Soler has been a disappointment for his new ballclub this season with a .209 BA, seven home runs, and 18 RBI. That said, he has a strong track record against lefties (.936 OPS since 2022) and has homered once in eight career plate appearances against Valdez.

Rookie Heliot Ramos has been a revelation for the Giants, posting a .316 BA, .918 OPS, and 165 wRC+ through 130 plate appearances. He’s been red-hot at the dish, averaging 3.0 total bases in his last nine games while collecting multiple hits six times. I’ll bet on Ramos to keep the good vibes going.
