Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo was sent off as the fourth-choice in the Belmont Stakes odds, and provided another Triple Crown race upset.

Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo proved his victory at Churchill Downs was no fluke, as he took the 2026 Belmont Stakes despite being sent off at +600 in the Belmont Stakes odds.

Renegade was revealed as the 2-1 favorite on the morning line after the drawing of the Belmont Stakes post positions, with Chief Wallabee as the 3-1 second choice. Golden Tempo was listed at 9-2.

Don't miss the 159th Belmont Stakes when it returns to Belmont Park in 2027.

2026 Belmont Stakes favorites

Renegade (+200)

Closing in tandem with Golden Tempo in the Kentucky Derby stretch run was Renegade, who overcame his rail draw to finish second.

Trainer Todd Pletcher has played no small part in making the Derby-Belmont layoff popular in this century, in part because he's won this race that way three times. His first of four Belmont wins came with the filly Rags to Riches, who won the Kentucky Oaks just one day before the Derby.

Chief Wallabee (+300)

Bill Mott won the 2025 Belmont with Sovereignty, and Chief Wallabee gives the Hall-of-Fame conditioner a good chance to take the race once again.

Chief Wallabee was highly competitive on the Florida road to the Derby, and was a game fourth in the Run for the Roses.

Golden Tempo (+450)

Horse racing fans everywhere were disappointed when it was announced that Golden Tempo would skip the Preakness Stakes and train up to the Belmont Stakes. The Kentucky Derby winner rallied from dead-last in an unforgettable finish that made trainer Cherie DeVaux the first woman to win the "Run for the Roses."

Belmont Stakes prediction

Renegade overcame all kinds of trouble from his rail draw in the Kentucky Derby to just miss out on the victory. He should not encounter that kind of traffic from post four of nine in the Belmont Stakes.

You couldn't ask for better human connections for this horse, with two-time Belmont-winning jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. up for four-time Belmont-winning trainer Todd Pletcher.

Pick: Renegade to win Belmont Stakes (+200 at FanDuel)

How to bet on the Belmont Stakes

Horse racing bets usually fall under two categories: straight and exotic. A straight winner is focused on the performance of a single horse and you make picks for win, place or show. Exotic bets require picking how multiple horses finish the race like with the exacta, trifecta and superfecta. How to read Belmont Stakes odds

Horse racing odds are often displayed as fractions, which makes for simple math: divide one number by another and then take that sum and multiply it by your bet amount. For example, the favorite of a given race could be 3/1. The means a one dollar wager would net a three-dollar profit.

In some instances, a heavily-favored horse could have odds of 3/5. Which means you would need to wager five dollars to win three.

It is also common to see Belmont Stakes odds displayed in decimal style, especially when the fractions get more complicated as you get closer to the race. In that case you simply multiply your bet by the number given. If you don’t like how odds are displayed at your sportsbook, use our odds converter tool to switch to American, fractional or decimal style odds.
