Masters 2023 Predictions: The Best Masters Picks to Make Before the Odds Move

Masters week has begun and with so much betting action expected to pour in as the week goes on, some lines and prices surely won't be available come Thursday's opening round. We break down the best bet to make before that happens below.

Patrick Cantlay to win outright (+2,000)

Patrick Cantlay is among the stars at the 2023 Masters Tournament, and I see him as a tremendous value to win the Green Jacket at +2,000.

He's one of the PGA Tour's best players to have not won a major championship and has managed just one Top-5 finish in the majors for his career — a T3 at the 2019 PGA Championship. While that looks a little gloomy, he might be playing the best golf of his career and is trending up as he heads to Augusta.

To start, it's important to note that the key betting stats at Augusta National are strokes gained approach, strokes gained off the tee, and driving distance... all of which Cantlay fares very well.

Cantlay has been playing well of late, posting a T19 finish at THE PLAYERS and Top-4 finishes at both the Arnold Palmer Invitational and Genesis Invitational. He's finished Top 20 or better in five of his seven events this season, including a runner-up at the Shriner’s Children’s Open where he posted an 11-under 60. He's dangerous and is entering the biggest week of the year in great form.

The former UCLA standout got off to a tremendous start at Augusta in 2022 with a 2-under opening round. He ultimately finished T39 but if not for a horrific 7-over 79 on Moving Day, a much higher finish was certainly in order.

The 2021 FedEx Cup winner has eight victories on the PGA Tour and has made 125 of 149 cuts on top of nine runner-up finishes. Considering this is the fourth-ranked golfer in the world, he's got longer odds than you might expect.

He arrives at Augusta ranked No. 6 on Tour in total strokes gained at 1.836 per round while checking in at No. 2 in strokes gained off the tee (.960). He's also a solid No. 30 in driving accuracy at 63.86%, which will serve him well at Augusta.

In addition, Cantlay is not only accurate off the tee, but he's long. He ranks No. 22 in driving distance (308.2 yards), which will help him tremendously... especially on No. 13, the Par 5 that's been lengthened from 510 yards to 545.

The 31-year-old Cantlay made his first trip to August in 2012 and he finished as the low amateur that season. In 2019, he posted a solid T9 and also finished T17 in 2020. While he missed the cut in 2021, the overall results have been pretty impressive.

His accuracy off the tee and his No. 1 ranking in Par-4 and Par-5 scoring make him a threat this weekend, and he won’t wilt under the pressure of the major. He performed very well at TPC Sawgrass in the ‘unofficial fifth major’ at THE PLAYERS Championship and has proven he can play his best against star-studded fields.

In addition, while he is a so-so No. 41 in strokes gained approach, he's torn up the Tour with a 71.79% greens in regulation percentage, the fifth-best mark on Tour. He's No. 3 in scoring average (68.58) while also ranking No. 2 in birdie average (5.15).

There just aren’t a lot of holes in his game. He ranks No. 45 in strokes gained putting and ranks 14th in putting average (1.708), well ahead of the field average. In addition, he's 17th in one-putt percentage at 43.59%.

This could be a sloppy tournament, with rain in the forecast for each of the four days. Cantlay’s power off the tee, as well as his accuracy, should help him during inclement weather.

Based on his overall success on the season and his decent history at the Masters, it’s hard to imagine he'll stay at this 20/1 number for long as more money spills in on the top guys this week. Bet him not before that value is sucked away.

Pick: Patrick Cantlay to win outright (+2,000 at Caesars)
