Great place to post these daily, like the new Thread, so here I will be posting the Men's and Women's games daily and my thoughts.  So here we go, got Women's in a few hours, some preview before the games:

    Tournament Format Change:

What is a nice way to be competitive, the preliminary-round games will have the top-ranked teams in Group A, and bottom-four will be in Group B, so what most likely will be Canada and USA will advance from Group A and therefore shall play the top two teams in Group B.  The rankings are based on the 2012 IIHF World Rankings which, at that time, Canada was No. 1, but since then USA is on top while Finland and Switzerland are 3rd and 4th, respectively.  However, Russia has moved on top of Switzerland to claim 4th.  Your first two must watched games are:

Canada versus USA on 2/12 and Finland/Switzerland on 2/12 earlier.

Group B will feature Sweden and Russia while Germany and Japan are the other two.  In regards to Russia, Alexei Yashin of all people is the general manager of the team whom led the 2013 World Championship team to a surprising Bronze Medal, allowing them a possible real claim to win the group and challenge in the playoffs.

With that said, no doubt I feel the Medals will be: USA, Canada, Russia

As for the game's themselves for Day 1, 2/7:

    Finland +4.5 versus USA/u6.5

These two teams last played November, with a 3/1 Friendly win for Finland, but when it mattered in 2013 during the World Championships, USA claimed a 3/0 and 4/2 victory.  Was two years prior that USA dominated 11/0 and 15/1, but different teams for both.  Seems when competition matters, as odd as it sounds, USA grinds down, but the recent friendly matches were:

USA 3/2 Canada; USA 3/2 Canada; USA 8/1 Sweden; USA 1/3 Finland; USA 3/2 Canada

As for Finland, they played a three game set a month ago, with the results as follows:

Finland 4/0 Sweden; Finland 4/3 Russia; Finland 4/1 Germany

This is a USA team that can score when they want, but it is a Finland team that can play good defense, can see a 4/1 or 4/2 win for the USA.  Next up:

    Canada -9.5 over Switzerland

I really want to take over 10.5 as the odds at my book are horrible but others are great, but these two have not played since April of 2013, which was a 13/0 Canada win, and was two years prior that Canada won 12/0, but they face off in the first game in the Vancouver Olympics that saw Canada prevail 10/1.  Needless to say matches are not there to define really alot of things.  But Friendlies from Canada do show that outside of the two USA losses, they beat Finland 6/3; Sweden 4/3; Russia 9/1 within two months last year.  As for Switzerland their friendlies were four matches this year with one late last year so technically they are fresher, those were in order of 2013 to yesterday even: 6/2 over Slovakia; 4/5 to Sweden; 1/2 to Austria; 4/1 over Germany; 5/1 over Sweden.  I see them as basically just playing matches against not really good opponents and those they did, AKA Sweden, they got bounced, Canada can cover this spread, easily, would not surprise me to see another 10/1 final, but I want the handicap.  So Final Plays are:

    Finland +4.5
    Finland/USA u6.5
    Canada -9.5

Nice write up....the only thing that scares me....Amanda Kessel did not play against Finland....is she worth a goal a game.? I dunno...it could end up 5-0 USA....I like the under 6.5...but it's juicy at (-145).

Thanks Cannon, but she did not play versus Sweden either, did not play at all in the Four Nations Cup, just a matter of how Finland comes out, can see a very tentative start, first game and all

I'm not big on international hockey but I have 2 questions
    1. Why r these games so high scoring
    2. Do they play on a bigger ice than they do in the nhl ? I mean longer distance between goals ?

    Checking in.

So what happened bevo? You had Fin +4.5 and U6.5, and then decided to go for the Middle on both?

    2/2/0 is your W-L-D record?

Sorry to hear if the middle backfired on you.

Hey chan yah the lines moved mere minutes prior as I felt I would see a 4/0 or 5/1 match. I was ok winning one of two but yikes didn't expect that after USA scored 30 seconds in. Felt route was on.

    2/3/0

    USA -6.5 -105 over Switzerland/o7.5 -105

Quite a bit of a different game here for the American Ladies, as they will not be facing the goal tending they faced versus the Fins.  That game saw the American Ladies out shoot Finland by a wide margin yet only produced 3 goals, one of which came right under a minute in.  The game really should have been a nice 7 goal effort, take into account two hit posts also, nonetheless, while Switzerland showed heart versus Canada, was very clear Canada did not put the foot to the pedal, and with Canada now scoring 5 goals to America's 3, the goal differential, though a game in is now crucial, America will want to score.  USA and Switzerland have faced off three times, once in 2006, once in 2012 and once in 2013.  In the last two matches USA defeated the Swiss 10-0 and 5-0, again though, the 2006 match was their second game in the Vancouver Olympics, a 6-0 win.  This is different, younger USA team and more hungrier, truly believe this is a 8/1 or 8/0 type final.

    Finland +4.5 versus Canada/o5.5

Outstanding effort was had by the Finnish as the goal tending work kept them in what should have been a blowout loss to the US. As for Canada, again, strong start but nothing was to be had in the 3rd period.  These two picks are based on Finland's goal tending, but goals can still be scored.  Another reason is their recent H2H matches, as their matches go from 2011 to 2013. Only one time has Canada trounced them, last April 8/0, other than that, their matches were 4/1; 3/2; 5/1; 8/0 (as previously mentioned); and 6/3.  Again both teams have gotten better and a lot faster, can see another 5/1 or 6/3 style Canada win.

    5/4/0

    Sweden -2 -105 over Germany/u4.5

To say the Swedes got off to a rough start is saying something, winning 1/0 over Japan, only, did not expect that, to say that Germany lost to Russia by 3 goals is saying what we felt, just a team here to compete, being in Group B is vital for standings, unlike Group A where all four teams advance, Group B not so much.   This is a bigger win for Sweden, 3/0 or 4/0 does not shock me, based on past history, being in Europe, these two teams have faced off a heck of a lot more than most.  Last 5 match ups were all taken by Sweden, dated back to January of last year: 3/2; 3/2 (OT); 3/0; 2/1; 2/0 last month, not a lot of goals are scored here, and especially since Germany struggles so much.

    Russia -2.5 over Japan/o4.5

Much like the above description, the same applies, its what we thought about Russia and Japan, minus Japan's goal tending, which will not the same story here.  Host country has a spot to claim to face one of the two biggies after their 3rd round match up, and though Finland seems to be the team that can scare USA or Canada, I believe it is Russia, they are fast, and stealthy.  Only match these two faced was five years ago, 3/1 to Russia, does not matter, what is recent is how Japan has been able to keep up with most teams, but not really the prime teams, Switzerland was their only real match and that was a year ago in a 2/0 friendly win, dont care about that, Russia in their last five, mostly friendlies were: 4/1 and 4/1 over Germany; 4/3 loss to Finland; 8/1 over Austria and the 4/1 win over Germany again here last game.  This to me has a 5/0 or 6/0 Russia win all over it.

Also, I said USA 8/1 or 8/0, was a goal off, not too shabby.  On the other end, really expected Finland to score versus Canada.

I like your picks and your insight, but I think Germany- Sweden will be a close game. They played each other last year in the world cup, Sweden won 3-2 in overtime . Sweden finished last place on the bracket, Germany finished second. I will take Germany +2.. Best of luck to you !
