If your in school and you decide to stay sitting during the national anthem, wouldn't you be in trouble for your action s? There's a place and time for everything.

The NBA has a longstanding rule for team conduct, that states explicitly, that players, coaches and trainers are to stand and line up in a dignified posture along the sidelines or on the foul line during the playing of the American and/or Canadian national anthems..

    No exceptions.

The NFL needs to adopt the same rule ...problem solved.

Too late for that now, Slim. All h3ll would break loose. It should've been a rule a long time ago.

Trump often attacks everyone and manufactures controversy.  Kneeling during national anthem is optional in NFL and no rule requires players to stand up.

There is really no disrespect of American flag.  Actually, players are protesting the killing of innocent people by police.  US constitution allows for freedom of protest.

Trump is buying into that many disagree that they are not disrespecting the flag. Just as the players have the right, fans have the right to turn off the channel.   As always trump should be using issue to unite rather than divide, but we all know that is not going to happen.

in 1st grade I remember asking my WW1 VET great grandfather why the jehovahs wittnesess did not have to stand for the anthem or pledge allegiance to the flag ...

He said that was exactly what he fought for=FREEDOM  ......

His son a WW2 disabled VET said "as a FREE AMERICAN YOU'RE NOT REQUIRED TO WORSHIP A FLAG,SONG OR GOD "...

As you can tell from my avatar, I will always stand for & sing the anthem.

At the same time, I don't like what the players are doing but agree with their right to do it.

It truly pains me to see it but it will mean nothing if change does not take place in our country.

Yes they fought for our freedom    .....  WE STAND TO RESPECT THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES....THEIR LIMBS SO WE CAN HAVE THESE RIGHTS AND PRIVILEGES......  worshipping and RESPECTING are 2 different things....If you cannot respect the people who have allowed you to have these rights then leave your belongings here (your possessions were allowed to be bought because of the veterans and since you do not respect them , you should not keep them) and get the f&ck out of here.......   I hear North Korea is wonderful this time of year...

Right??? A little Constitutional Law 101. The NFL players are in their WORKPLACE and subject to the rule of conduct of their employer. The Constitution requires that no law/governing body can infringe on the Rights of citizens to assemble, petition, express, etc. The NFL would not allow Kap to wear his "Pig" socks if he were to start for some team, and they prohibited Dallas players to wear a Sticker on the helmet when 5 cops were murdered by# BlackLiesMatter in Dallas.
Why Goddell/Owners have turned into the proverbial Frog in the Frying pan is that they had a choice to make when Kap started his act and that was between Players (70% black) and Fans(99% do not tune in t o NFL for BLM propaganda). Trump is standing for America, standing up to those who show disrespect for America, and short term/long term this may be a losing play in a Resistant Media but is a Overwhelming Winner with the supporters.

I know it. Everyone keeps saying it's their right to use their NFL platform to protest.

Ummm, no it isn't. The NFL could take that "right" away tomorrow and any lawsuit filed by a player would be thrown out in two minutes in a courtroom.

I thought Trump was wrong because the protests had nothing to do with Patriotism. Everybody loves America and he made it seem like those protesting hates America and the troops. It really was a weird time to discuss this topic when the protests were dieing down and losing all steam. Last year would have made more sense when it was actually a big deal. Anti protest people were really winning because Kap wasn't signed and it seemed like most in the nfl opposed the way they were protesting. Trump has more important issues instead North Korea/Russia?the failing health care bill/tax reform/ wall Mexico is suppose to pay for being the news over the weekend he made it about Americans vs supposed anti Americans.

On the 4th of July Kaepernick knocked Independence Day and said that to find his independence, he went "home" to Ghana.

Let's compare human rights in the US and Ghana.

Kaepernick has said that America was never great and insisted that the US is a racist nation.

"I won't stand to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people."

When someone says the protests have nothing to do with patriotism and everyone loves America, what are they talking about?

In 2017, the only oppressing that is being done is being done by welfare. Welfare keeps people at the bottom. Capitalism let's you move freely.

To answer the question, I would say public school no, private school yes as far as getting into trouble goes.

Players can kneel or stay in the locker rooms during the anthem if they want. The NFL can suspend the players if it wants to.

I do think it would be a bit disingenuous for any owner who's stadium/arena was funded by any sort of tax payer money to suspend a player for any protest during the anthem though.

I thought Detox made a good point in post 18.

Awful analogy. And by the way I do not necessarily think you would get in trouble in school if you did not stand up.

It was not "unpatriotic" nor disrespectful to the flag to stand on the sidelines while playing the national Anthem
In 2009, the U.S. Department of Defense and the National Guard began paying the NFL millions of dollars to hold patriotic displays.

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy also confirmed the practice began in 2009

    <QUOTE>

“As you know, the NFL has a long tradition of patriotism. Players are encouraged but not required to stand for the anthem.”

In 2015, Sen. John McCain and Sen. John Flake released below joint oversight report on what they called the “paid patriotism,” saying the Department of Defense gave as much as $6.8 million in taxpayer money to professional sports teams to honor the military at games and events over the past four years. McCain criticized the move in a statement at the time, saying, “Fans should have confidence that their hometown heroes are being honored because of their honorable military service, not as a marketing ploy.”
