Trump claims tariffs can replace income tax. However economists consider tariffs an inferior way to collect revenue for several reasons. First, tariff rates would have to be 200% to 400% or more on imports. As prices increase, consumers buy less. Secondly, there would be less imports and revenue if all manufacturing returns to the US.
