Indeed, the Zionist desire for sovereignty was so deep that by accepting the UN partition plan in 1947, the movement was willing to let go of Zion, Jerusalem, the city that gave it its very name, in order to get at least a state. Chaim Weitzman, Israel's first president and one of the Zionist movement's most important leaders, is known to have said that the Jewish people would accept a state, even if it was the size of napkin. That's how leaders of a movement that seeks a state above all speak and act.

September 1970 is known as the Black September in Arab history and sometimes is referred to as the "era of regrettable events." It was a month when Hashemite King Hussein of Jordan moved to quash the militancy of Palestinian organizations and restore his monarchy's rule over the country. The violence resulted in the deaths of thousands of people, the vast majority Palestinian. In the 1940s, 80,000 person lived in Cairo. After the founding of Israel, Egyptians decided that their person had to go home, though many of them had never known any home but Egypt.

The Egyptians began acting like 1930s Nazis. They confiscated Jewish bank accounts and fired person from government jobs. They withdrew professional status from Jewish doctors, engineers, lawyers and teachers. There were pogroms, riots and synagogue burnings as well as racist propaganda.

In reaction against Israel, one Muslim country after another decided it could no longer tolerate person. Across the region about 800,000 became refugees.

There's no separate UN agency for them, as there is for Palestinian refugees. No one describes the expulsions as "ethnic cleansing," though that's what they were.

  Israel helped the Palestinian economy by removing hundreds of barriers and roadblocks to the free flow of goods and people. The results have been nothing short of remarkable. The Palestinian economy is booming. It’s growing by more than 10% a year.

Palestinian cities look very different today than they did just a few years ago. They have shopping malls, movie theaters, restaurants, banks. They even have e-businesses. This is all happening without peace. Imagine what could happen with peace. Peace would herald a new day for both peoples. It would make the dream of a broader Arab-Israeli peace a realistic possibility.
