In my view this entire altercation developed because of two factors,rage's tourettes and the guy's insistance on staring at rage.One of those things could have been avoided and one of those things could not.
 This is a classic case of supporting the wrong side morally just to prove a point. (see ACLU). I would be willing to bet that most of the posters supporting rage are political conservatives,while most of the ones defending the person with bad intentions are no doubt politically more liberal. Just an observation,and I won't be around to respond to any haters.

Can see an altercation at a bar and somebody insults a wife or somethng but buying towels at a Target?

I used to be law enforcement for several years after I got my b.s.
degree and before I needed to make real money (which is why I quit to go back to grad school).
Anyway, I have seen MANY MANY fights and this is not the wild wild west my friend! Those days are long gone!
You are lucky you were not charged criminally with a Fray actually! That is a criminal charge although a normal fray is only as misdemeanor! Depending on the judge and if you have any priors you can do JAILTIME and/or a hefty fine WITH A PERMANANT CRIMINAL RECORD!! In addition there is a civil component which you now face! The guy will sue you in civil court
and if you threw the first punch (and there are witnesses to testify to this fact), he will be successful. Sorry but this is true! You initiated Battery plain and simple! YOU SIMPLY CANNOT HIT SOMEONE FOR CALLING YOU NAMES AND/OR MAKING FACES AT YOU! THESE ARE THE LAWS AND YOU ARE CONSTRAINED BY THEM AS A CITIZEN IN THIS SOCIETY!
You simply must control your temper in the future and not lay a hand on anyone unless in self defense which THIS WAS NOT!

The other guy did nothing wrong!!!!!!!!

He was looking at raging...ooooooh boy.

Then Raging went over and said "what the fuck are you looking at" he didnt say , why are you staring or anything like that. he cursed at the guy immediately

later when they guy was looking at him and shaking his head he was probably looking and saying to himself  "what the fuck is this guys problem?"

then Raging jumped him


Everyone on here defending that is ridiculous to me

When you cycle through the pros and cons, there are too many cons.  Police, attornies, their friends, etc.

Not disputing these facts, but it goes to show you how much people's attitudes have changed in the last 25 years.  If, in the 1980's, an asshole was mouthing off and not minding his own business, he'd get more than a couple of punches.  How about

What if you got consent first ala....... "Are you willing to take this outside?".... or "How much would it cost me for a couple swings?"

Its hard for me to believe a man would sue another man just for an ass whippin.    Now if there are huge medical bills maybe........but a black eye and busted nose
 
And jail time......Idk about all that.   Just a couple years back we'd fight in the local pool hall twice a month.  Cops would come with the ambulance, patch everybody up and send us home.   I got a ticket once i believe $200 or so.   Hell fights happen all the time around here, dont think to many folks actually go to jail.  I guess laws are differ in states and among local Gov's maybe.

the old "I was disrespected" defense doesn't fly in many courtrooms, although if he can get it moved to Georgia it sounds like timber might see things differently.  In Jersey, he's pretty fucked.

I'm still wondering how the cops didn't charge him with something. also, target erases their security tapes after a couple weeks (if they are going to be used as evidence by either side).

This was not at a pool hall with a bunch of regulars / buddies.
 
This was in a Target and a 50+ year old dude with his wife.
 
And a knee to the jaw can remove some teeth pretty quickly.
