Great move standing up for yourself....it sickens me when assholes do something like this, take a beating then try and sue. My friend was in dominos with his girlfriend. He's a pretty small guy and one of the nicest guys around. These dbags behind him were calling his gf a person for no reason and were heckling them. He snapped, turned around and punched the guy a few times then cracked a bottle over his head. The guy was fine the next day and was threatening to sue. Then he explained to the kids parents why he did what he did and they refused to press charges.

Maybe try and reach out to this guys family and apologize and explain what happened. Or go knock on his door and apologize to him personally and try and convince him not to sue. Best off settling this out of court if possible.

I know how you feel. I don't get why us guys have to act like hardasses but you should have walked away. Its bigger to do that then anything simply because its the hardest because its so tempting to hit the mofo.
 
You gave into to temptation and it felt good at the moment.

what exactly did the guy do?
He was looking at someone, got annoyed when the person said "what the fuck are you staring at" got annoyed when the same person came over to curse at him and threatened him

then the guy shook his head wondering basically WTF is going on here and raging goes and assaults the guy.

Raging started the whole confrontation.

rage ~ Normally I would not endorse a physical confrontation when dealing with a fucktard like that guy,but to me it went beyond staring (if your account is accurate) and turned into the guy trying to dehumanize you.
   I believe that you tried to settle the issue without violence initially,but he just wouldn't let it go.With that being said,you should have stopped after punching him in your face.Kneeing him in the jaw as he held his head and then punching him in the face a second time as he repeatedly apologized was out of line,and that's what is going to get you cooked.
  I hope that you got the names and phone numbers of the two older people that came to your defense as you'll need all of the help that you can get.
   I'm not judging you because I don't know what you go through everyday and I'm guessing that it would have been easier to ignore him if your wife was not with you.I wish you the best of luck with this one.

HOW WOULD you like it, if you had a 9yr old daughter with DOWN SYNDROME, and she looked a little different than a normal 9yr old, let it be how she looks, or how she acts, and then come sit next to me. I'll stare right at her for 10mins straight, and then lets see if you dont wanna and attempt to knock me out. People don't understand how it works until it happens to them...

if i was staring at someone with tourette's, and it was obvious that me  staring at them bothered them....why the fuck would i continue to look at him? I wouldnt even look in his direction again, not due to fear, just outta respect.
 
when raging had a problem, and he kept staring, he was looking for a problem, and im glad you gave it to him.

It is best, and a mature thing, to not stare and gawk at people who have physical abnormalties or disabilities. And if the guy did touch you first, then all things considered, I don't think you have anything to worry about with any lawsuit.

to the guys who are defending him and feel he will not have legal problems, consider that what is written above is his version. By his own account he confronted the guy and invaded his breathing space, which led to the altercation. It's not for me to say what the outcome will be(I'm pretty sure I know), but I will say that if anyone is put in his position you would be wise to walk away. WALK AWAY.

If you'd pushed him hard once, I'd support you. But you assaulted him twice. I know you have it rough, but there's the "sticks and stones"
axiom and the 'rubber and glue' axiom. You just can't resort to violence or you'll be sued or worse. GL though.
