My issue with this is, WHY prolong the game if you don't have to, and risk injury to one of your key defensive players?

I could make a post that the sky is blue and there would be a handful of people willing to debate me to make a name for themselves.

The major argument against me in this thread is that you cant assign probabilities to someting that hasnt already happened.  But I can say that it is more likely that the sun will come up on Feb 1, 2011 than it wont, even though it hasnt happened yet.

But you are right, it is silly at this point.

    14dapoint is now typing:

has a player ever been injured after scoring a td with less than 2 mins left and kicking off on defense?  If so, cite it, or since it has never happened, it is impossible to predict.

Plus scoring a Touch Down to "Rub it in" on a team when they are at home could entice one of the players on offense to throw a cheap shot to hurt a defensive player.

Exactly. There are more pressing issues out there, yet time is being wasted discussing about a stupid game and whether running the score was a right decision. Seriously who the fuck cares? What does that do to you? It's just a fucking game. What fun is there if every game is being played in the most perfect way possible(in terms of probability)? The world will be boring as fuck if every single person has the same personality.

People are dying in Africa because of hunger. Wars are being fought. These are real issues. Yet people are actually debating about a meaningless NFL game. So the Jets shouldn't run up the score. Big fucking deal. One of these days, a team will lose because of it. So what? Are there gonna be people who will die because of it?

Stop analyzing a game to the nth degree. ITS JUST A FUCKING GAME FOR CRYING OUT LOUD. Those players and coaches will continue to earn their fat millions.

Instead of wasting time debating about this, we should discuss about the day's betting card and other gambling questions.

I don't remember who but a couple years ago, wasnt someone up by 1, scored a meaningless TD to go up by 8 and then the other team tied it to take it to OT and won?

Sure taking the knee is the right thing to do, but when you can walk into that end zone I would imagine that's hard to pass up. Especially in such a big game against your rival.

Exactly when you are up in such a heated rivalry, your goal should be for the game to end.  Not to mention last Defensive drive was real bad.  Not a good way to end.

There are so many situations like this in the game of football.  I just assume that either the players/coaches are not that smart and/or the game would be a lot less exciting.  The reason the game is played is for entertainment.

    here's a scenario,

bears down three, throw a possible pick six and the packer kneels at midfield. 1:50 left and one timeout.

packers kneel on first down, bear linebacker comes in on packer right tackle low, he "sweeps the leg", breaks his tibia and fibia, compound fracture, Theismann style. 1:46 left

    packers forced timeout.

after they cart the guy off, emotions are high, the packers snap and kneel again and there's a little scuffle, the right guard throws a punch. personal foul. 1:41 left

after the refs regain peace the packers face a 3rd and 30 at their own 30. the bears still have a timeout. GAME ON!

    Hilarious and true.

i was at my parents house for dinner on Sunday watching this game... my mom doesn't know squat about football... and even SHE understood that the Jets RB shouldn't have scored a TD on that play, and that by scoring it gave the Patriots a chance to win the game, when they otherwise had no chance to win it...

with that in mind, how is it possible this has actually been debated for 10 pages?  this is supposed to be a site for people who have at least an above average understanding of football, and yet there are people who think there is something to debate here?

baffling, to say the least!  my 65 year old mother knows more about football than most of the people on this site, and that is no joke!  actually, it is a joke... a bad one!

I have a regular deck of cards. I make you two offers:
    1. "I will give you $100 if you pick any card that is NOT the ace of spades."
    2. "I will give you $100 if you decline to pick a card at all."

How many people here will choose option #1?

I completely agree with your post, but this is Covers, after all.

I have learned to give up on such noble measures.

Let the homers ruin this place during the playoffs, like clockwork. After the playoffs, they will be nowhere to be found and us gamblers can have our space back.

    14dapoint is now typing:

    Actually, I'm not.

Again, you don't know what the word probability means.

Therefore you should probably stop typing it.

I have rather enjoyed watching you run away from your silly assertions.

There is a reason for that, you know...

And as far as 14daroad, I find it even more amusing that your'e basically refuting the point that Vanzack is trying to make, by saying he has no data and no fact, but then you explicitly say the exact same thing, on the other side of the argument. You may as well have said "I disagree with you, and want to completely discard you're factless argument, by introducing a factless argument"

Except I'm not making a "factless argument"

It is a fact that there is no team that has ever lost by scoring when they could have taken a knee.

The fact that people can even try to argue against this thread is frightening.

Who would've had the last laugh if the Patriots got a lucky break and sent that game to OT with 2 last-minute TD's because of an extra 2 minutes they never should have had?

Some people are so dumb it hurts.

And it is a fact that vanzack's argument did not say there was. He believes it will happen eventually. However, neither of those points is relevant at all. The point is scenario 1: player goes down = 100% win, scenario 2: player scores = slightly less than 100% win. It is a mathematical certainty, just like 2+2=4, that going down is the correct move 100% of the time.

Vanzack: I'm hoping you can give me your thoughts on this. I believe that at the beginning of a game, if you win the coin toss you should defer 100% of the time. Do you agree or disagree and why? Thanks.

So there's absolutely no chance a qb would fumble the snap & the opposing team ends up scoring..........no chance whatsoever......physically impossible........correct?

What's more likely? The opposing team scoring (which happened) recovering an onside kick (which is far higher than .0001%) and scoring again (which is whatever the % of completed hail mary passes is) or a team fumbling a snap. A kneel down has NEVER been fumbled, but considering it's physically possible, i'd say there's a .00001% chance you lose by going down and about a 2% chance you lose by scoring. You still lose. Bye.

Since neither has happened but both are possible, you're just guessing on the odds........thanks for playing.
