Couple thoughts
The question tonight is whether the Rams pass rush can force him out of the clean structure Shanahan creates. That’s where Purdy becomes a little more volatile and to me that’s probably the single biggest matchup in the game…

Since Stafford joined McVay and the Rams in 2021, he has essentially never played preseason. McVay has been explicit about it Stafford gets his competitive work through camp and joint practices rather than exhibition games

Stafford’s Week 1 numbers with the Rams have been pretty damn solid despite basically never playing in the preseason
2021: 321 yards, 3 TD, 0 INT
2022: 240 yards, 1 TD, 3 INT
2023: 334 yards, 0 INT
2024: 317 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT
2025: 245 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT
So I really don’t buy the idea that Stafford needs preseason snaps to be ready. Outside of the ugly 2022 Buffalo opener, he’s pretty much hit the ground running every Week 1 under McVay.

The Rams first-half scoring in those five Week 1 games was
2021 vs Bears: 13
2022 vs Bills: 10
2023 vs Seahawks: 7
2024 vs Lions: 3
2025 vs Texans: 7

It does look like McVay tends to feel things out a little early in season openers, then make his adjustments at halftime. Stafford’s full game Week 1 numbers have been strong, but the Rams have averaged only 8 first-half points in those five openers. The offense has usually been much better after halftime than it was out of the gate.

I’ve been looking at this fucking game for a week. At first I was leaning toward the total, but the more I worked through it, the more I kept coming back to the Rams.
San Francisco already has a couple guys fucked up on that defensive front, and that’s exactly where LA can attack them. The Rams had one of the best running games in football last year, and you know McVay is going right at that weakness.
If LA gets that running game rolling, now Stafford gets play action, easier throws, and a chance to really open this thing up. On the other side, Frisco is still dangerous, but they’re older in some key spots and I’m not convinced they want to play this game from behind with Purdy dealing with that Rams pass rush.

You forget Shanahan is 11-7 vs McVey and has already proven that he can win with lesser teams. Also, the Rams picked this game to go to Australia. It was a home game for the Rams, but when they play San Fran, their fans invade the stadium. McVey knew this and wanted to play in Australia instead. Shanahan has been pissed all summer about this.

Does it concern you that Stafford is the oldest player on the field tonight?

Personally, I’d rather have an aging quarterback who can still sling it than an aging receiving corps and a banged-up D-line. Call me old school, I’m just saying.

@River_fish
I appreciate that. I wish I would’ve come across that somewhere while I was looking at the game. Either way, thanks for the heads-up.
